Rode NT3 vs Sennheiser e865

....... two (in this situation) very affordable condensor vocal mics ...

Does anyone have experience recording vocals with either or both of these. I know there are many other vocal mics you might suggest, but it's already a done deal. I have basically already paid the money and I just need to pick one of these two and give the other one back.

The Sennheiser was made in Germany and the Rode in Australia.

The Rode seems a little more sensitive, but the e865 seems to have more presence ... or at least it allows you to sing closer so there is more apparent presence.

My buddy who found the Sennheiser in a pawn shop said it had been there for a couple of years. Based on their asking price I don't get it.

The Rode is a slimmer, small capsule condensor ... probably used more for overhead choir work, overhead toms, or acoustic guitar. The Sennheiser has a more tradional hand held stage mic look (and possibly character).

Help me decide please!

I'm not sure about the Sennheiser, but the Rode can hold a 9 Volt battery inside the body, for times when phantom power is not available. I have used the NT3 and it's an excellent mic for many purposes.

I may have to sell something to buy them both. The Sennheiser has a natural EQ that fits my voice perfectly, but I can't stop thinking about how perfect the Rode would be for recording acoustic guitar.

Rode mics are great (I own two NTKs that I use as drum overheads). However, they can be REALLY bright. Match carefully with your mic preamp and try before you buy if at all possible.

I balance out the NTK's presence rise with a pair of Arsenal Audio mic preamps.

You are right ... the high end detail is amazing! I have no hardware mic preamps - only the preamp models in POD Farm.

Well, for acoustic guitar I have been doing more and more middle/side recordings using an NTK as the middle and a ribbon mic as the sides. I find this to be a great combination.

so, I finally bought the sennheiser e865,
and i got to say this mic is absolutly stunning
compared with a sm58 or any sm58 like type of dynamic microphone, it totaly beats it hands down.
I can also use it to amplify my classical guitar..

Congratulations!

I finally decided on the Rode and my buddy is holding the e865 for me. It is an awesome sounding mic!
