hey anyone tried cleaning their finger board with Rosonol lighter fluid? pretty much its naphtha. I never have I use lemon oil, but I have seen where guys use it. of course I have also seen a youtube video where I guy used spit so go figure. Only reason why i'm curious is the finger board on my Charvel wildcard is getting grubby and lemon oil doesn't seem to get it all of anymore. I would hate to use it and screw it up. I love my wildcard.

Re: Rosonol to clean finger boards?

a light touch and some #0000 steel wool works wonders while giving the frets a nice polishing at the same time

Re: Rosonol to clean finger boards?

I use alitle bit lighter fluid on a towel and clean the board like that. I would not do it on ebony board cause they dry so quick but thats just me.

Re: Rosonol to clean finger boards?

The difference is lighter fluid has added ingredients to the naptha but yes , you can use lighter fluid to clean a fretboard. Naptha is pretty cheap and a can lasts forever.

Re: Rosonol to clean finger boards?

99.9% of the gunk on a fingerboard can be removed with PLAIN WATER! Water is the universal solvent, and it will remove all the dirt and dead skin that gunk up a board. Just take a damp rag, wipe it down lengthwise, and then crossways to remove the gunk along the frets. Just work quickly, and then wipe it dry. This fine to do on ebony and rosewood boards, and finished maple as well.

If it needs more than that, I'll let it air dry for bit and then use the Dunlop 65 Fretboard Cleaner, and then follow it with the Dunlop 65 Fretboard Conditioner. Gerlitz Guitar Honey is another great product for conditioning fingerboards. There is also a product called Fret Doctor, (bore oil) that is often highly recommended. I've never used it; but I'm going to try it.

On a lacquer-finished maple board, I got in the habit years ago of using a bit of Carnauba Wax to protect the finish, and that worked very well. All of my maple fingerboards these days are finished in poly, so I don't bother with the Carnauba anymore.

Re: Rosonol to clean finger boards?

Ronsonol USED TO be Naptha, but isn't anymore. I don't actually know what's in there now...
You can buy a quart of real Naptha at Ace (or other hardware stores) for what a little bottle of Ronsonol goes for, in case you wanna save some $.
You can also get a huge container of "Mineral Oil" for the same $ as a little bottle of Lemon Oil (which is what Lemon Oil is made of, it's just mineral oil with Lemon scent added to it) I've had some seriously grungy fret boards, I just get a cloth and saturate it with the Mineral Oil and wipe it down REALLY good with that, it's never not gotten everything off the board, plus it hydrates the fretboard at the same time. I did have a beater guitar with green funk all over it, that one I used Naptha but that will seriously dry out the rosewood, so you gotta oil it right away or you could get cracks. Or at least where I live, with the 0% humidity we get in the winter.

Re: Rosonol to clean finger boards?

ok thanks guys I think I will stick with my lemon oil and maybe try a toothbrush. really love my unfinished Charvel necks and don't want to risk messing them up.

Re: Rosonol to clean finger boards?

What kind of woods are on your unfinished Charvel necks?

I only play on unfinished necks these days. I have an all Indian Rosewood, a Wenge back with a Ziricote fretboard, a Bubinga back with a Ziricote fretboard and an all Bocote neck. All Warmoths. I never use any kind of mineral oil, lemon oil, naptha, etc. on them.

Only steel wool for me.

Re: Rosonol to clean finger boards?

Personally, I think Gorgomyte works wonders. There's nothing it won't get off, leaves your frets shiny as hell... & it's never done any damage to my guitars..

Re: Rosonol to clean finger boards?

I have always used Lighter Fluid for cleaning necks, and naphtha is supposed to be even safe for finishes. I hadn't heard that lighter fluid is no longer naphtha, if not what is in it now?. The can I have at the moment says it's just naphtha. It's also good for cleaning adhesive residue, like from removed velcro and the such. You let it soak in and rub it off. This change in the fluid is news to me.

Re: Rosonol to clean finger boards?

hey smoking aces my DS-1 Desolation has a neck through mahogany neck with a rosewood fret board, and my dead calm aqua wildcard has a bolt on maple neck with a rosewood fret board. I really don't like the feel of finished necks don't know if my hands are to sweaty or oily but there seems to be to much drag on finished necks. I do have a Jackson DK2M dinky made in japan model that has a finished neck, but the finish is very thin and a satin finish s its not to bad.

Re: Rosonol to clean finger boards?

hey smoking aces

Who?

Anyway, I do not like finished necks either and I have a lot of experience with them as I've been playing on unfinished necks for a decade now.

Back in 2008 I used some lemon oil to clean a gorgeous walnut pickguard I had on a Tele. It was truly a gorgeous walnut burl and the pickguard cost me $70 when I originally bought it. Anyway, I used the lemon oil and once it was dry the neck day the pickguard had cracked in 3 different places. I have used steel wool for unfinished woods ever since then, just speaking from experience but a satin finish is still technically finished so you are probably ok to use lemon oil. Rosewood fretboards respond well to lemon oil as well even though it is unfinished, but you have to be careful with some unfinished woods out there.

I guess now is when you'll tell me to put that in my pipe and smoke it?

Re: Rosonol to clean finger boards?

ooooh snakeaces so for getting your name wrong, no I don't use lemon oil on the neck just the fingerboards, Charvel gave me care instructions that the necks were oil during production and that the oil would stay in the neck for years. so they suggested just play it and if it gets dirty use a damp cloth to wipe it

It's ok dude, I'm just giving you a hard time about the name thing.

Good idea on using the damp cloth to clean an oiled neck for sure.
