"rules" or tips for mic placement?

I'm currently using an e609 mic hanging from the top of my amp. Its positioned on the grille, just left of the center of the cone.

My live sound is great, but my recorded tone still sounds like a bag of bees.

Will moving the mic help?

Are there any rules or tips on mic placement, or is it completely random and experimental?

distance = depth (usually)

Closer to the dust cap (center) gets brighter, going to edge gets more body.

Little movements, like a 1/4" make a world of difference.

Plugging the mic into a "good" preamp... something with an input transformer and lots of headroom also makes a world of difference.

Context is everything.

Get the amp off the floor so you can hear what it ACTUALLY sounds like! Or at least get your head/ears level to it. That's what the mic really hears.

Thanks Moose,

I think more depth is what I need. I'll have to get a stand and try moving the mic off the grille.
