Running without a load

Re: Running without a load

Don't do it!! There is a lot of power that needs to go somewhere... you can mess up your amp.. not kidding :smack:

Re: Running without a load

without tubes it shouldnt be a problem, unless the power transformer has cruddy regulation, then HV can rise and kill you HV power supply caps.

I have to ask... No load, no tubes- Why would you think of that?

No, I'm not doing it. I'm trying to settle a discussion with another guy I know. I always use a load but he said it doesn't hurt if the tubes are out. From what I've been reading he is correct. Without the tubes there is no current flow so no flyback voltages can happen.

Thanks for the replies :beerchug:

Re: Running without a load

Sorry to hijack your thread Pepi but same subject, does it matter how long you run an amp without a load, in my case no speaker cable attached. I had mine going for about 2 seconds before some nasty words were shouted.

There seems to be no change in sound, volume etc.

THis is correct... a tube amp run w/ o a load can be damaged.... but if there are no tubes in the amp, the amp cannot function in a normal manner (no current flow), and could therefore be run w/o a load as well without taking serious damage (unless as Germ stated the amp already has technical problems either by design or by damage)....

But no tubes also = no tone, so it´s kind of a useless experiment ;)

THe shorter the better, ideally never. I´d consider myself lucky in your position ;)
