Safe to use EQ pedal, in the effects loop?

This is how I set mine.

Nice amp! You're covering up George Lynch's autograph though ha ha

I do know about the 2/20w attuentator button ;).

On full 20 watts, I still do NOT percieve the amp as very loud. My uncles Blues Jr. (said to be 15w) sounds louder to my ears; it must be the voicing.

about tinnitus- I had it while studying jazz music back in 2010. Nothing to be fond of.

Well if it's on 20 watt and you think a drummer would drown it out
then I can't help but think there is something wrong with that amp

You mentioned it getting bounced around on a road trip a little while back

Something may have come loose

One of your neighbors may have grown tired of the loud guitar next door and fixed it for you

I'm just kidding, the neighbor thing is the most unlikely thing to happen
do not confront the neighbors

This does seem unusual. I had a Blackstar that had a button that made the tone "darker" a button changed reverb as well and literally said DARK. I'm sure you know your amp though. I'm assuming it has EL84's, which typically provide a good tone with mids that will cut on through a mix. However, boosting anything on a 20w amp will only (in my experience) push to a point where clean headroom will all but disappear. I've got a 6505+ and a 6505 MH. I can get cleans out of the 6505+, but not from the EL84 powered 6505 MH, AT ALL. For the high gain stuff it does well though. Not anything close to the BALLS you get from a 50 watt and up amp though. There are many discussions about tone perception, yet I can say that when playing with a band and trying to cut through a mix, I'm going 50 watts and up all day. Not saying the 20 watts CANT do it, just that I MY perception is that 50 watts and up does it MUCH better. I would trade in or sell the amp if its not doing what you need rather than spending more money attempting to turn it into something its just not. Sell it and get a 40, 50, or 60 watt amp with some EL34's (or 6L6's... but sounds like EL34 power would be more your cup of tea). Just my two cents. Best of luck with it, however you go about making it happen

Quote from an internet forum:

"I thought the 20 sounded decent. The biggest problem for me was its output. It just wasn't as loud as a 20 watt amp typically is. Even with a speaker swap, it could hang with my drummer, barely. I tried a 40 and thought it sounded horrible."

It seems like the HT-20 isn't very loud, I think much because of it's voicing. It has no high-mid or any peak that stands out- But loads of bottom end, and a 200hz woof.

I'm gonna try with a 10-band EQ pedal in the end of the FX loop, to coach some more volume out of it.

(Cut ALL of the very lows (60 hz and down...) and everything up to 200hz (where the "woof") is. Then add something from the 800 to 1200hz area. And keep the overall output the same, as it was before. :)

Though, I don't think I'll be playing with a drummer (atleast not a "loud" drummer) anytime soon.

But I'd wish for more "marshallish" midrange, and less of that ... speaker-flapping low end (that gets lost anyways, since it's an open cab).

thanks

The Eminence "cannabis Rex" speaker is said to be a good replacement- aswell as other speakers with less lows, loud mids- and good sensitivity.

I can't afford to change the speaker anytime soon- so an EQ pedal is my next shot ;)

EDIT: Many owners say the stock speaker is "poor"- but I can't afford to replace something that is actually working 100% ;). The Blackstar is going to be my only amp, until I win the lottery, lol!! ;) .

Thanks,

So-

I've decided to get a cheap, Behringer "stereo" 15 band graphic EQ-

And use one channel first in the chain- then the other channel last in the Effects loop. :o

Wouldn't that be a treat :).

Thanks for all the replies.

Beware of having one device plugged both in front and in the FX loops, sometimes you can have grounding issues, leading to much noise
good luck, worst case is it lives is whole life in your fx loop

Thanks, I did not know.

I have had great results doing so. I use the Empress Para-Eq and just recently picked up the new Boss 200 series EQ. Both fine products for all your EQ needs.

I run a Wampler EQuator through the loop of any of my amps that have them...

Its certainly is a fantastic tool! My Marshall’s seem particularly happy with the EQuator pushing the mids just a touch!!!

Also dialing back some of bass & piercing high end you get while playing the dirty CH of some of these EL34 monsters can come in quite handy as well ...

Well, I'm a "midrange guy" hehe. I guess you've heard the album Dio- Holy Diver? The guitar sound there is really bright, loads of high mids. :). Then we got like, Robin Trower, who even use a cocked wah!! as a mid boost ;).

Yeah, plan is to boost some mids, while dialing back the low-end. (The whole amp starts to rattle when I turn it up).

I think I'll pick up a Joyo boost. (Having had good experencie with Joyo.). I can get a "Caline" for even 40% less, but something about the ultra-low price puts me off....

One of my favorite records of all time. Still stands up to anything to this day. The only problem with pushed mid-range sounds is unless you are playing with the band, you probably won't like the sound as much in a quieter / isolated situation. The reverse is also true, most awesome bedroom tones would never cut in a band or sound good on a record. If you haven't done so, go have a listen to the AC/DC isolated tracks on Back in Black or similar timeframe. Those guitar tones (isolated) will make you want to pull your hair out and scratch your eyes out they are so harsh. Put them with the band in a mix and you have gold.

Good thing then, I don't have a band! (lol! :).

I'm looking for one, or two other, acoustic low-key musicians- to maybe form a folk music/acoustic trio. I'll use my electric guitar for bedroom use, and maybe in the future "trio"...

Makes me sad to know, I'm 30, and never got to play, and tour with a proper rock band. Even though I've been motivated as "F" the entire time. Now it's time for some quieter, more intimate music :).

Well, I'm a poor man (as poor as Norway'¨s welfare system will ever let me be, ). So the Empress is about four times what I have to spend :/

But I guess I'll be happy with a Joyo 10-band, if it's the same quality of the analog delay I got. :). Which is great (and affordable).

:D

Ahhh....no shame there at all my friend. I was simply sharing what I use and that it works for me. All similar type products will work and be fine. The key is getting a desired result within the parameters you have to work with. :)

I use a "dirt cheap" chorus; a tc. electronic 3rd dimension. I bought it, because it was the cheapest pedal I'd ever come across. And it sounds... good! :) Not "great"- but I'm fully able to use it, in an inspiring and musical setting.

All that "high end" equipment sure looks nice, and tempting... but I need to remember myself to be happy with what I got, and not sad because everything I'll never have! Kind of like, a Buddhistic approach :).

Enjoy your stuff, man \m/ :D

The key is finding something that works and having fun playing and making noise. If it can do that, I am happy!
