SAHB-2B Blackout Metal Tone Test

Sup guys?

New here, I recently got this pickup.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f7h56aAc3Ic

Yeah I have alot of mids/presence whatever.

One thing I do not like is that it sounds like it has a wah-wah on:eyecrazy: Or a similar effect, i'm sure you can hear it.

I'm relatively noob to pickups (and actives in this case). Is this the sound you get with actives?

Re: SAHB-2B Blackout Metal Tone Test

All Actives sound different. FWIW...that's the first good sound byte I've heard of the AHB-2Bs.

I've played the AHB-1 bridge and neck, the old SD Livewires, the Dave Mustaine set, and an EMG-81...and all produce different sounds.

YMMV

I see.

This does the job pretty well, tons of gain and it's clear. Tho I need to wire a switch to my empty booster hole (EMG-PA2 was in there before) so I can switch between high and low output mode.

I couldn't really hear such a difference in the 2 modes (had it on high first, now changed to low). Only gain. But I need to be able to switch it quickly before I can say something safely.

Oh btw, FWIW/YMMV? What does that mean?

Re: SAHB-2B Blackout Metal Tone Test

FWIW = for what its worth
YMMV = your mileage may very

I'll say the AHB-2s have more mids than the AHB-1 bridge. The AHB-1 neck in the bridge is more grindy and organic. The EMG-81 has more initial pick attack.

Ah thanks!

In your opinion, how does the 81 compare to the AHB-1?

Re: SAHB-2B Blackout Metal Tone Test

You know...very different PuPs. The EMG-81 has this real percussive quality to it. The pick attack is always there, so you get massive articulation. But that's the problem as well...its always there. Got annoying to me after a while. Plus its a little light in the low-end. Now in a mahogony guitar you'd pick up that low end, and I think it would sound great.

The AHB-1 bridge has some real big output. I actually turned off my Tube-screamer when I played it. Biiiiiig bottom...neutral mids...lotsa highs. Now the AHB-1 neck model in the bridge has more meaty mids than the bridge model, and has this real nice grind to it. The bridge model is more hi-fi in comparison. Both have good articulation, and both sound warmer and more "passive" than the EMG-81. I have a EMG-85 I'm gonna test in my Caparison...I've heard that that model is thicker than the 81.

Re: SAHB-2B Blackout Metal Tone Test

what's this jumper you're talking about at the beginning of the video?

Re: SAHB-2B Blackout Metal Tone Test

Sounds cool dude, but you gotta downpick the hell out of that first riff (besides triplets) and the verse! Sylosis is all about the downpicking!

That, and you're a bit out of tune - My guess it's its the low E being pushed sharp. Try tuning it a few cents flat so when you dig in it's back up to normal pitch.

Under the AHB-2 Blackout Metal there is 2 pins. And there is this jumper/connector that you can put on those 2 pins.

With the jumper on, you get MASSIVE output, and sick sick sick gain.

With it removed you get regular high output, that you can use with the clean channel. Tho it doesn't work that well.

Thanks man! And I know, but I suck too much to handle the power of Sylosis' downpicking :(

Yeah you are probably right. I should palm mute a little bit closer to the FR. I tend to palm mute very hard:eyecrazy:

That's a nice idea, but it would kinda ruin the tuning when i'm playing other stuff.

Re: SAHB-2B Blackout Metal Tone Test

I thought the same thing to, but I find it a necessity now! Just tune it so you're still in the greenlight range but a bit flat - I generally go by ear after getting it in range.

Re: SAHB-2B Blackout Metal Tone Test

Watching that video is actually pretty informative for metal heads!

At some points listening I really dig the sound and chunk, but there are times like you said that that cocked wah sound is there... if it was just for single note leads it would be super great, but I also don't like that for riffing around.

Your skills are very nice my friend! Watching this stuff really makes me want to practice more and play more leads!

Re: SAHB-2B Blackout Metal Tone Test

could be from gearbox too that is the problem...I find a lot of the amps sound kind of "wah"ish on it. Try playing it through a nice tight amp, might sound better that way.

Thanks dude!:D

I know what causes the wah'ish sound now, it's the "Screamer" pedal in GearBox.

I recently got the Metal Shop addon (since without any packs, you can't get any good heavy sounds besides mine) and I found a good tone. The wah'ish sound isn't there anymore! Maybe a tiiiiiiiiiiiiny bit, but I guess that's because it's active, and has a lot of "power" to it.

I don't have any tight/good amps:(

And yeah it was the tube screamer pedal in GearBox that was the cause (see above).

Glad you guys like it!:) I didn't see any proper tone tests vids of it yet.

I think i'm gonna make another small test vid now that I have the Metal Shop addon.

Re: SAHB-2B Blackout Metal Tone Test

too much mid and presence for my ears! This pickup has already band 9 of mid, you should not turn the mid knob over 1 o'clock for rhythm parts. :-s
