Satin or Gloss?

Alright, my USACG stuff should be coming this week, however I've slacked off and still not ordered my finishing supplies. I plan on buying through reranch.

Anyways, the neck is birdseye, and of course they need to be shown off. I'm going to stain it vintage amber. However the finish, should I go gloss or satin? I like the satin feel, however, I think gloss would make the birdseye look better.

Could I get away with spraying gloss and then not sanding the back of the neck very clean?

Re: Satin or Gloss?

I personally say satin. I got the satin nitro from Reranch for my USACG neck, and I just carried the sanding/buffing a bit further to put a touch of gloss to it. Turned out great, the birdseye jumps out in addition to some TASTY flame action on the back.

Re: Satin or Gloss?

Gloss has a high sheen even without buffing, sanding buffing just cuts down the orange peel and dry spray and bring out a higher gloss. I've deglossed gloss by rubbing out with 0000 steel wool and 'buff' out a satin sheen with 0000 3M Scotchbrite pads (white).
Go with satin if you like that feel, you can always buff it out like FF did.

Re: Satin or Gloss?

Satin for sure, especially if you like how it feels. I went the cheap route, I rubbed on some Minwax Poly satin finish, about 3 coats, used fine (0000) steel wool between each coat. After the 3rd coat, just a touch of buffing and it's smooth as silk.

Satin satin satin! It feels much better than gloss, and on a neck that is VERY important. I also happen to think satin finished Fender necks look super cool.
