hey people, i just wondered if you guys out there can tell me different types of overdrive / distortion and COULD YOU TELL ME THE IDEAL EQ settings for different types of tone. for example( saturated over drive, blues crunch , metal etc.) (Bass, Middle, Treble)

In other words , what should my EQ settings be at for different types of overdrive / tone!
I usually just crank the middle up to 10 but i want to know properly about this stuff!
Also, if someone could tell me WHAT THE FUK saturated overdrive means, that would be a great bonus! lool
thanks

Re: Saturated overdrive/ tone/ distortion tips

there is no method or settings that can give you what you ask- you'll have to do like the rest of us- work and try different settings with your gear until you find the tones you are after. I may take years to find your 'voice'
afa saturated overdrive, I have no clue, I always thought they were pretty much the same. Peavey used to use a circuit called 'satuation' to try to emulate the sound of tubes, (I never cared for it myself).

Re: Saturated overdrive/ tone/ distortion tips

Well, i am not a blues player, but when ever I play "playing blues" the best seems to be a clean channel or just barely breaking up channel pushed with a TS with drive not more than half way and level around 7 or more.

For metal I think the fattest saturation is pre-amp cranked and pushed with a TS with a drive on between 2 and 4 and level on 7 and 9, with a cab and amp running on 4 ohms. Be careful with your Master Volume though, with it at about 5 (12 o'clock) this setting on a tube 50watter might set off a national missile defense attack alarm.

Is that a marshall avt in your avatar? If so, I assume that's your amp. If it is, you will never get a true saturated od sound, trust me I owned an avt275 for 4 yrs and never got a real convincing tube like tone.

Re: Saturated overdrive/ tone/ distortion tips

If you can find the UK Guitarist magazine, every month they run a piece on how to get various famous players' signature sounds using beginner-oriented gear, with the base amp being a recent solid state Marshall. Check that out if you can...

Re: Saturated overdrive/ tone/ distortion tips

It's challenging for people to recommend settings for someone else's gear without playing through it. However, when I was learning and using my solid state Crate practice amp, I would try to explore different tones by setting each knob to an even number and no knobs could be on the same number. It was just a start point before I was able to start picking out the better settings and fine-tuning them.

Re: Saturated overdrive/ tone/ distortion tips

A recent bad ass setting I found for metal was on my Tele. Bridge s/c (stock), TBX rolled to half way between detent and full treble cut, tone around 9 o'clock on DS-1, distortion 3 o'clock and guitar tuned to Drop D. It was through my POS 15W SS amp and it still sounded BAD ASS!!! Like tons of brawn, guts, heavy drive and good low end thump, but not muddy at all.
