Savin' up for a Mesa!

Re: Savin' up for a Mesa!

Then go with a used DC series–will be around the $700+/- range and it is based off of the Rectifier and Mark series. I would recomend the DC-5, plenty of power for gigs, has incredible cleans, incredible amount of gain available but even then it takes pedals extremely well.

Ooo going to check that out! Thanks!

Re: Savin' up for a Mesa!

Don't buy the first Mesa you can afford. Many of these things sound very boxy and stiff. Some of those can be fixed with high volume but in Mesa land that means REALLY LOUD.

Hmm. Well, maximum wattage I would go is 50. I really like the looks of the 25 heads though, like the Mini Rectifier, M V 25 (well maybe an older and cheaper Mark if there even is a 25 watt version), rectoverb, etc.. :headbang:

Re: Savin' up for a Mesa!

Finding the right amp, or guitar, is kind of like dating. A mail order bride might work out, but the chances of finding the right person for you are better if you go out on a few dates first. Unfortunately, it is difficult to actually play a selection of high quality amps these days because brick and mortar stores don't usually stock them. But play as many amps as you can, including Mesa. It might be a Mesa... or it might not.

Very true. I will eventually do that, as I won't be able to get one for quite some time (money restraints). Thanks!

Re: Savin' up for a Mesa!

Hey uh, would a Single Rec be better than a Mini Rec? Tonewise mainly?

Re: Savin' up for a Mesa!

Mini-Rec with reverb added - fantastic combo, 25 LOUD watts.

Awesome!!! I would probably get the head version. Just because I want one of those kickass Mesa 2x12's or Mini Rec 1x12's to go along with it ;)

Savin' up for a Mesa!

The combo has the new Filmore speaker - I like it a lot, and prefer it over the 1x12 wide v30 cab I had (and sold). Worth trying with different speakers/cabs to get the tone that works for you.

As an aside, this amp/head through a Celestion Alnico Blue is astounding.

Yeah, I'm actually watching a Chapman video right now and they just mentioned the speaker! Awesome, thanks for all the info man!

Savin' up for a Mesa!

OH MY GOD- I watched Phillip McKnight's Mark V 25 and Rectoverb 25 comparison video- I need a Mark- Seriously. I loved the way the Mark sounded way more than the Recto did with high gain and crunch. And I even liked it a bit better on the clean channel. :wizard:

He also said that it can get whisper quiet, whereas the Rectoverb cannot, which is a huge plus. Man, I just hope some used ones pop up more in the future when I'm finished saving up cash. :)

You know what, I watched the video again this morning and I think the Rectoverb still holds up well. They both have completely different tones, and I love em both.

No, wattage is not a consideration when I warn that many Mesas can sound very stiff and boxy.

Consider a DC-5 which has it very badly and isn't high wattage.

Re: Savin' up for a Mesa!

MESA amp are a ton of fun, but ... I just priced out a set of replacement valves for my Tremoverb: $200! Yikes!

Thanks for the heads up, although I haven't heard of any complaints anywhere else about any Mesa being stiff or boxy.
