Scales used with thrash?

Re: Scales used with thrash?

Well you can pretty much always use major and minor pentatonic for any sort of music.

Re: Scales used with thrash?

Metallica uses pentatonic licks in almost all of their solos. They also do some major scale stuff, so you might wanna try that. Don't confine yourself to one scale, try some different things. I think messing around with exotic scales is pretty fun :13:

Re: Scales used with thrash?

How about some of the symmetrical/altered scales? perhaps try the whole-tone scale?

Re: Scales used with thrash?

For most old thrash, you would use either pentatonic minor, aeolian mode (natural minor), or melodic minor scales. Thrash uses a lot of chromatic bits, too, that are out of key to add tension.

try using a g major phyrgian for thrash, gives a really cool sound

The Phrygian mode is based off of the 3rd scale step, and is associated with a MINOR chord. In this case, G Phrygian would be the 3rd chord in the key of Eb ... very strange key for thrash, to say the least ...

Eb = E Major Scale/Ionian Mode
F = Dorian Mode
G = Phrygian Mode

etc, etc ...

Eb strange for thrash? :wrf:

Using Eb, as in tuning down one 1/2 step and playing like it's tuned standard, is normal, I suppose.

Playing in the actual key of Eb, with your guitar in standard tuning, is another matter. That's what I was referring to ...
Sorry if there was any confusion!

Re: Scales used with thrash?

Chromatic, of course trying to write chromatic solo's that sound good is not exactly easy

Re: Scales used with thrash?

Chromatic, diminished, minor pentatonic and the minor modes of the major scale, especially phrygian and locrian.
And maybe some harmonic minor stuff for kicks...
That should get you started :)

Depends on what kind of mood you're going for.
Megadeth, Pantera: Pentatonics, major modes.
Slayer: Chromatics and symmetrics.

i would suggest using the major and major pentatonic scales

That's what I'm doing at the moment and I get the sounds I want, Then just add in some notes in between for a little flavour, that's how I think of scales, pentatonics with extra bits.
