Re: Scam averted? 57 goldtop custom shop

Anytime someone tries to come up with a backstory for why they are selling something, I take it with a grain of salt. If they came up with something that confusing, I wouldn't even risk it unless they were willing to make the deal in person in front of a police station or another well traveled area.

Largest cash-in-hand purchase I ever made was 630. Looking back I guess that was risky. Doesn't matter how well I can take care of myself, the other person pulling out a weapon or some backup goons showing up would've taken my money.

You're correct that this likely scam would've been better with less backstory. The gifted from grandfather during college, the military husband for extra credibility, and especially the free shipping tipped the BS scales for me.

Run, dont walk away from this. One of the biggest scam patterns out there. Bad spelling, worse grammar, all signs of a scammer.

Re: Scam averted? 57 goldtop custom shop

Every so often one can stumble onto an insane deal online where a person is selling something great for a mind blowing price. This isn't one of those times. One time a guy in my area bought a storage unit locker full of mint condition empty guitar cases, and was selling them for crazy low prices. I got a Fender black plastic form fit Strat/Tele case for $35, but guys that replied quicker than me got some crazy deals of Fender custom shop cases and some nice Gibson and Martin cases too.

Sadly, these deals don't come around every day, and when they do they too often turn out to be scams like this one. You were wise to ask questions, hopefully they don't scam some sucker out of any money.

Nothing about this seems legit. You did the right thing.

I would avoid cash in hand transactions from complete strangers unless you take some precautions.

My buddy was robbed in the parking lot of what is now Outkast's studio (It was Bobby Browns then) on a cash transaction for a Moog and Korg Keyboard that was coordinated through an ad

Also beat him up a bit and tied him up to delay calling police and fired a shot near him to scare him we guess -since it didn't hit him.

Whole thing was a setup.

Now I'm super paranoid about a mesa cab I'm going to be selling locally. Really don't want to bring it anywhere, but also really, really don't want someone knowing where I live and thinking I could have more high-end gear at home

I was reading up on "secure" ways to do face to face negotiations a couple days ago, one tip struck me as somewhat paranoid - using the foyer of your local police station as a meeting point.

But I guess anywhere where there's cameras and a physical security presence would do.

When I offer or ask for local pickup, I often mention to go to a local Starbucks. There are often high traffic locations with plenty of cameras. If you're lucky, you occasionally have police officers present. I think this is safer than arranging a pickup at home.

Good call about the cameras. A facebook seller once suggested meeting me at a guitar center. The deal was 100 for a fulltone mdv-3 univibe. He said he was selling to fund his streetside preacher business. Strange day

Update: The custom shop r7 seller also had a 70s SG listed at the same time. After our messenger convo she deleted both listings. Now I just noticed this new listing of the SG in chicagoland. She will still pay for shipping, but only requires a $100 deposit before she sends the guitar

Now I have no doubt it was a scam. The initial reason the guitar was listed in Lockport IL and not the city she lives in Mississippi was that she "forgot to change the market place location". And now she makes a new listing in Chicago Heights and has adjusted the terms of her scam.

Yeah but English isnt the scammer's first language, so they dont get the intricacies of our language.

Most likely the scammer stole an ad from Ebay, CL where and used that to post the ad. Unfortunatley its very common.

There are a bunch of tells in this ad and text thread that its clearly a scam.
