Schaller, Gotoh or Original Floyd Rose?

Hi everyone, Merry Christmas!

I'm considering replacing the Washburn branded FR on my N24. Compared to my Wolfgang and other guitar that has a Floyd, thus one just feels cheap and seems to affect the tone in a bad way. Which model should I choose for a replacement?

The one that fits

Measure your stud to stud spacing and your recess area. Compare to the drawings you can get from all the manufactures and see what fits best.

The bridge you have is aka Lo-TRS and I may have an old one in my stash. I will see and do some fit checking if I do.

Nice looking guitar man! How do you feel about the bridge pickup? Is it staying in?

Thanks! I don't think so. I ordered a Duncan Distortion to try. If that doesn't working, I want to try a Wilde L500XL.

All of the replacement bridges that I can find have a more square baseplate, as opposed to the angles one on the N24. I don't know if I have the option of replacing it, which sucks.

My personal favorite is the Ghoto by far. If it fits use it as by far it has the best feel and stability.
I am working on a late 90's NOS Washburn USA Custom NOS unfinished neck and body build and a Ghoto is what is going on that one. The body is not a production guitar but appears to have been routed at the Chicago CS for a Ghoto it is likely one of the unfinished Sammy Hagar guitars.

The Distortion will be quite different, but the difference between the BL and the B&B is more subtle.

why dont you try to identify the problem and fix it?

Re: Schaller, Gotoh or Original Floyd Rose?

You’re comparing the tone of two different guitars. I doubt it has to do with the bridge.
I’ve never heard a difference in tone with even the cheap licensed Floyds. But the size of the inertia block does change things.

By the way, Schaller makes the real Floyds.

The material of the block prob more so... another thing to consider is the body neck junction on both guitars (among other things)
Id go with a Gotoh GE-1996 because the baseplate will match up nice with your trem route and Id also get a Bill/Becky L500XL and prob a new pot and jack... That will make it a more better formidable machine.

Re: Schaller, Gotoh or Original Floyd Rose?

OFR block-lock screws will hit the body when you pull up on the bar because they stick back more. Just an overall annoyance unless you route some extra space.
I'd go with metalchurch's suggestion. Just do all the measurement checking before ordering. The sustain block's vertical depth needs to be very close to the same.

Re: Schaller, Gotoh or Original Floyd Rose?

Newer OFRs work great; the Schaller Lockmeister is the same thing rebranded, but can sometimes be had cheaper.

Re: Schaller, Gotoh or Original Floyd Rose?

After comparing them, I don't think any aftermarket ones will fit on the N24.

Personally I like the ofr. But for that route I'd find some kind of ibanez thing

Re: Schaller, Gotoh or Original Floyd Rose?

I went back through some older post on Jemsite and several users have posted they replaced their TRS bridge with an OFR without modifications. I would suggest printing off a template and laying it on the body to be sure before buying a new bridge.

OFR and the Schaller licensed version are different, the Schaller licensed has a smaller baseplate and it’s cast. Schaller also made the OFR for Schaller.

Then there’s the Schaller Lockmeister, which combines the solid construction of the OFR with the small footprint of the Schaller licensed

Re: Schaller, Gotoh or Original Floyd Rose?

Good point, Id also like to add that the Schaller Floyd w/cast baseplate features knife edge inserts like a Jackson JT-580, JT-6, and Ibanez Original Edge and place the baseplate further back and will most likely cause clearance issues with the string locks/trem route as well as intonation problems (possibly).

After thinking on this I think Aryton's research on an OFR being a drop in proves true in most cases, but as he said make sure you check first due to varying factory tolerances.

Where can I get a template?
