Schaller Locking Tuners vs Fender Schaller Locking Tuners?

Re: Schaller Locking Tuners vs Fender Schaller Locking Tuners?

you are right

I have never had trouble with any of those things

may never see that

if you come across a photo of one of these split head stocks, please share

I of course cannot imagine that

i have run drywall screws into pine that split
but that was much softer and much thinner material

i have drove nails into woods that split
much dryer older heart pine that was brittle
and much larger size nails than the blunt pins

in fact the way you keep pine from splitting when nailing it
is to blunt the ends

I could well be wrong

its all good

Re: Schaller Locking Tuners vs Fender Schaller Locking Tuners?

Many years ago I had a Canadian Rock Maple neck that came without tuners but it originally had the pin type... I figured Id be good to go using an extra set of Gotoh tuners which required a screw and I also figured Id just run those screws in cause I was in a hurry... I figured that little phillips screws wasn't gonna hurt nobody...
Well first screw was in over 3/4 of the way and then the head twisted right off... caused me more work and time...

I know some tuners have rather small alignment pins which are also rather sharp and they might go in but most tuners have pins that are 1/8" high and aren't sharp enough to really drive in with just the threaded collar alone, although anything is possible I suppose.

Then again not all woods are of equal hardness, then you have quarter sawn vs flat sawn...

Anyone can do what they wish but Id rather be safe than sorry.

Same as mounting a neck, Id most certainly drill pilot holes... Cause that happened to me before as well.... *split neck heel from driving a screw in without drilling. Granted those screws are much bigger in diameter and are capable of more damage.

I looked at the pictures

and I am aware that heel screws are a different thing altogether

Re: Schaller Locking Tuners vs Fender Schaller Locking Tuners?

I had Fender US Shop make me a 70s CBS neck 2 years ago and these locking machine heads came with the neck -not sure if they are ping or not -they are very good -but not quite as dazzling feeling as my favorite Sperzells or Grovers -but absolutely up for gigging every night and nothing you would ever consider changing -even if they were imports by PING.

Is there a way to tell without loosening the machine head?

Re: Schaller Locking Tuners vs Fender Schaller Locking Tuners?

I've got the Fender/ping ones on my Mexi strat, Schallers on my Music Man, Gotohs on my custom T-style, and I've used sperzels on another strat.

I'd probably put Schallers and Gotohs on the top of my list for preference - Gotohs are a killer overall value. The Fender/Ping units work and hold up just fine.

The Sperzels are just great too, very sturdy, but I prefer the way the Schallers and Gotohs feel on my thumb.

Here's a pic of the Gotohs in case anyone's interested. They're about $60 on StewMac.

I have the Ping Fenders that came on a MIM neck I bought. They are great, very smooth and zero maintenance.

Ping hardware usually has their logo on it, it's PW (Ping Works) in a little circle. Not sure if they have the logo on OEM hardware like that made for Fender but it would be on the bottom.

The “PW” is on the underside. You have to remove the tuner to see it.

Re: Schaller Locking Tuners vs Fender Schaller Locking Tuners?

Never drilled a hole
Never had any problems

You guys are making it harder than it needs to be

Small screws and nails do not require pilot holes

This is the way myths get started

Please remind me to never let you near any of my guitars.

Re: Schaller Locking Tuners vs Fender Schaller Locking Tuners?

Definitely drill pilot holes, hard maple is, well, hard, and it can take a lot of force to drive those rounded pins into it, I would almost be more afraid of damaging the tuners if I cranked on them hard enough to drive the pins into the maple, at least on the tuners I have installed.

And yes, in my younger, more rushed, "I don't need a pilot hole" days, I have also broken small wood screws in necks.

Re: Schaller Locking Tuners vs Fender Schaller Locking Tuners?

My experiences I spoke of was when I was a little girl just barely out of school. I also split a neck heel that was already pilot drilled but just one size under what it shouldve been..
Ive even seen necks that split years later from tuner retainer screws because i guess the wood dried and shrank or the pilot holes were too small and that cause it, or both.

Re: Schaller Locking Tuners vs Fender Schaller Locking Tuners?

Does anyone here have anything against the Ping tuners? I've never had a problem with them, but I hear some people have.

Re: Schaller Locking Tuners vs Fender Schaller Locking Tuners?

I've never had a problem with Ping tuners. Actually most tuners these days are really good, unless it is a super-cheap guitar.

Are they on the same level as Schaller, Gotoh, or Hipshot, no but Ping products are not junk. People like to pooh-pooh them because they are a Korean manufacturer.

Ironic considering Leo used the cheapest tuners he could find (Kluson) and nipped the ends off.

Technically no. But I didn't like Pings in Squier because they were too quick and loose for easily tune plain strings accurately.

I use Wilkinson EZ-Loks mostly, because they we're cheap (I got bunch of those for 20 eur a set couple of years ago) and have solid feel with slow rotation. They also keep tuning every bit as well as real lockers.
