See, I think I should just go with one of these instead of getting a six-string bass and tuning it up to E standard.

So did I! It's just to harsh, sterile, lifeless. I'm blaming the 5 piece mahogany body , 3 peice neck and inch thick coat of paint. Or, it just needs a set of pearly gates
