schecter scorpion or prs se singlecut

I just came across two used guitars in good condition:

one is a schecter scorpion tribal, 24 frets, set neck in black, nice feel and light weight, although i didnt like the duncan design active pickups that come with it.

the other is a prs se singlecut tabaco burst,22 frets, set neck. sounded a little better, not by far( i always switch the pickups to duncan JB bridge and 59 set anyway). weights a lot more(in a bad way) than the schecter. both seem to be made of asian mahogany (nato).

I can get the schecter for almost half the price of the prs. what do you guys think? is the prs se singlecut really better sounding, or are they equal in quality and tone wise?

Re: schecter scorpion or prs se singlecut

They're both generally pretty good guitars. It mainly comes down to what sounds you're after, and any cosmetic preferences.

The Scorpion probably doesn't have active pickups. Check out what Schecter says about it here:

Those pickups are described in a forum thread here:
https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?152658-Duncan-Design-HB-103-Humbuckers

I've played a lot of inexpensive Schecters, and they do feel good and play well. I'm not a fan of the shape or graphics on that one, but I've always been really impressed by the quality for the money.

The PRS would be the better choice if you're looking for something more like a Les Paul -- singlecut, 22 frets, more traditional looks, etc. There's going to be a lot of overlap in their tonal ranges, I expect, but even with a '59 in the neck of each, they'll probably still sound pretty different because of the neck pickup placement. And of course, a JB can be a real wild card.

So, what sort of music do you play?

whats the actual figures? that is, if you want a further weighed out decision.

I would just like to comment that, in my opinion, a Schecter Scorpion Tribal looks like a piece of ****, whereas the PRS looks like an ugly guitar.

I would take an ugly guitar over an ugly piece of **** any time.

You have been quite the negative nancy lately.

Re: schecter scorpion or prs se singlecut

I'd suggest you get the PRS Singlecut...really exceptional for the price (assuming you're getting a good deal in the first place). What are the asking prices?

Gonna have to disagree with Ms Sammler on this.

The PRS SE Singlecut is not very much like a Les Paul. Neither is it very much like its American PRS namesake. Those guitars are massive chunks of lumber with massive sustain to match. (I owned all three guitars at the same time. I compared them plenty.) Even with American humbuckers, the skinny SE never came close.

If anything, the SE Singlecut is much more like a Les Paul Special. Herein lies a clue. PRS SE Singlecut models with P90s absolutely rock. In the case of the SE Singlecut, you beed Phat Cats or P-Rails, brothers and sisters.

Still got my SE One and single cutaway SE Soapbar.

459 bucks for the prs and 200 for the schecter.

the prs is a great looker and the other tribal one is just ugly.
unplugged they seem to have the same sound, although i could be wrong.

the idea would be to play classic to all out rock oriented music covers ( ac/dc ,audioslave, incubus, santana, sevendust, breaking benjamin).

Re: schecter scorpion or prs se singlecut

Go for the PRS. The Scorpion is hideous. While features are basic, the Singlecut SE's are nicer in some ways than the regular SE series.

Re: schecter scorpion or prs se singlecut

I duno what the market is like in Brazil, but here in the States $460 gets you really close (and sometimes all the way to) a Gibson...

A Faded Les Paul Studio or SG would be my goal if I had that kind of budget and was looking for a hard rock sound.

Re: schecter scorpion or prs se singlecut

im giving US alike prices for the sake of not misleading you guys to the ridiculous brazilian prices that foreign instruments have around here.

i do have a gibson faded LP and its terrific. bought it knew for 880 bucks last time i was in NY City.

almost sure the prs cant touch it in terms of tone

Re: schecter scorpion or prs se singlecut

The PRS SE series always felt a little more quality to me in terms of resonance and finish when compared to schecters. Also, a PRS SE singlecut looks a lot more classy to me compared to the schecter tribal.

Is it less like a Les Paul than the Scorpion is?
