Screamin' Demon - How do you use it?

Re: Screamin' Demon - How do you use it?

^^^ this ^^^

Most anything that this guy is known for was not done with the Demon.

Pretty sure the second Mob album is the Demon. It sure sounds it on several tracks. A lot of SLO on that one too.

Re: Screamin' Demon - How do you use it?

1. Drop what you're doing and go to a music store and pick up KXM.

2. Sell your Screamin Demon ASAP.

3. Order the new Perpetual Burn humbucker, new for 2014.

There aren't many songs the guy is 'known for' on that album...if any.

I wonder what George is using on KXM , his tone is pretty airy not his typical high gain tone

Do you know when it was recorded? If the deal with Arcane went public in early Dec, he was probably already using that model or prototypes of that model prior to that. He's also been advertising other pickups on his site for those silly guitars since at least last year...so who knows. He also has Teles and Lesters that might have original pups or something else off the reservation.

And that's not even getting into amps or effects or recording techniques.

Id say KXM was recorded mid to late last year. Now that you mention it after the amps, effects, recording techniquesect.. the pickup was probably way down on the list when it came to the tone on the album , and it`s a album great by the way

To the poster of interest, this is the box my overwound 'demon came in. This one isn't the OG El Diablo (which is a REALLY overwound 'demon). I was thinking....it would make a heck of a cool set if SD ever decided to match the standard 10k demon as a neck pickup with something like this. I really think that more people would dig the 'demon if they had a chance to try an overwound one.

Re: Screamin' Demon - How do you use it?

Is that really true? I always have an easier time doing this with higher output pickups, I think because they compress and make otherwise quiet harmonics closer in amplitude to regular picked notes.

I've gotten great harmonics with high and medium output pickups...

Yes, I think everyone generally does. I think the assumption they make with the Screamin Demon, that more highs is more harmonics/squeelies is wrong because those highs are not as compressed with the lower output, and if it were true, heavy metal guitarists would be buying up all the Strats in town and throwing their HSH Jacksons into the river. It says something that people have a hard time finding evidence that George Lynch actually ever used a Screamin Demon.

Thanks for your post, Jay! The specs of your overwound demon remind me a lot of the new Mr. Scary pickup by Arkane. It's about 14k, equipped with an alnico 8 and voiced similarly to the Demon. Would you say that your demon sounds similar to Lynch's new pickup? If they're not similar at all, what would you say are the biggest improvements of the overwound demon? Is the "coldness" gone? Much more mids? Rawer highs? I'd really like to hear about it. So far, it sounds promising.

As for the Perpetual Burn humbucker, I'll definitely check it out, especially since it seems to be a moderate output cross between a 59 and a JB. I only wish they'd ship these puppies already...

Re: Screamin' Demon - How do you use it?

That arcane model has been described as more raw and vintage and open than the Demon, with a sweeter high and more articulate lows. And consider the Arcane does that without a row of Allen head screws. I don't think that's what you'd get with an A8 and more winds. That was of the first things I thought of when the specs came out but I don't see it being that in the ballpark.

Re: Screamin' Demon - How do you use it?

Darth, thanks for chiming in on the Arcane; I definitely don't have any experience with them as of yet. You're also correct; an overwound 'demon with an A8 mag doesn't sound the way the Arcane is described for the most part.

On an unrelated note: have you got around to trying an S-Deco yet???

Tesla, overwinding the 'demon brings the resonant peak down and shifts the high end so to speak. It is still bright, but instead of the almost twangy highs a stock demon has, you get much more aggression in the highs/upper mids. The A8 gives the 'demon a bit more girth through the mids....it thumps a little more and is warmer than the A5 version (both regular and custom wound). It still has the quick attack and articulation that I like about the 'demon in general, which is great. It just hits a lot harder, cuts instead of twangs and sounds a little bigger overall. Hope that helps!

Re: Screamin' Demon - How do you use it?

The demon is a very articulate pick up. It reminds me of the Lawrence type pick ups, Since Bill was very interested in always having his pickups be very articulate. I had a long conversation one day with Bill Lawrence about his methodology for designing a pickup. Bill was really a jazz player, and he really hated the brown sound, or so he said. He had substantial experience in metallurgy, and he did not like the kinds of materials that were used to make screws, slugs, and keeper bars. He loved articulate pickups.

The most important thing I got from the conversation is that very articulate pickups let you use a great deal of gain without getting muddy, and that they allow you to use a greater range of the EQ on your amplifier.

I know that for myself, my tendency is to leave the same EQ settings on amplifier, and then blame the pick up or other factors if the sound I have is not right.

Not yet. I called this week to order a few things, including the S-Deco and MJ is gong out of town for a few weeks. I'll order when she gets back in.
