screamin' demon hybrid?

what pickup would work well with this one? i read somewhere that a pearly gates, and also a custom.

Re: screamin' demon hybrid?

DD/Demon could be cool, it would be bright. I've done a couple 490R/Demons and a 59/Demon, 490R being the better one. It's kinda like a heavier, nastier P90, really cool, has a lot in common with the DMZ Fred.

Re: screamin' demon hybrid?

I've done a 59/Demon and it sounds amazing in the neck. But a C/Demon with a UOA5 is absolutely incredible!!

Re: screamin' demon hybrid?

I think a Duncan Distortion would be a great hybrid with the Screaming' Demon.

Got one in the bridge of my SG right now. However, the rest of the project isn't finished, so I can't comment on how it sounds. :guilty:

UOA5 is different from a regular A5?

does it matter which coil is which? and which coil would be better to split to?

Re: screamin' demon hybrid?

I've been using a screamin demon bridge and pearly gates neck in my LP for a couple years now, that combo will never be replaced

The UOA5 has a softer top and more mids than a straight up A5.

That's all a matter of preference. The coils are symmetrical, but the Demon has both screws and hex head poles. I'm not sure if they're interchangeable between the two coils, though. If they are then you can pick whichever. Just remember, though, that whichever coil you pick choose the opposite from the other pickup since they're RWRP from each other. So if you pick hex go with the screws from the other. If you pick screws go with the studs from the other.

Somebody please correct me if I'm wrong there.

Re: screamin' demon hybrid?

I thought hybrids work well because each coil has different gauge of wire. So in the case of Demon/Custom, they both use the 43 wire? So I reckon it sounds good regardless? It can't be paf meets modern tone.

This is why when making a hybrid with a Demon coil I'd consider the Demon "underwound". It takes the thickness out of a neck humbucker if combined with something PAF-ish.
Best way I can explain it is by comparing it to Dimarzios. The Dimarzio Fred is like a PAF Pro coil plus one coil that's "around 5k DCR". That coil is the closest thing to the Demon coil. Then, the Norton (and of course the Air Norton) is made up of a coil similar to one in the Tone Zone, and one similar to that Fred coil. So if you like the Dimarzio Norton, try a JB/Demon hybrid. If you like the Air Norton try that with Alnico II. If you like the Fred, try a 59B/Demon hybrid.
I haven't tried this one, but I'll bet an Alternative 8/Demon hybrid (with the A8) would be awesome.

Re: screamin' demon hybrid?

Another mid-level coil to try out with hybrids is the Distortion Neck. (around 6k DCR) and it sounds great with an Alnico magnet.

Re: screamin' demon hybrid?

À screamin demon/sethN a8 with a5 slugs is one of my favourite neck pickups. Super articulate and warm and juicy and smooth with the tone pot rolled down slightly. Split its superstratty in a les Paul.

@frank stop right there... I have 31 guItats, but if you keep talkin like that I'll need 130 guitars to try it all out!!:( ps. Don't you think the a2pro slash is a bit lIke the air norton? Sake raunchiness and sweetness but more complex and dynamic.

A patb3/screamin hybrid... What about that?

absolutely! DistN a8 is clarity like crazy. But if you wanna talk hybrids, try it with the fullshred neck a8 for more tightness and articulation or a screamin demon for more a p90ish roar.

Thanks for that! The JB/Demon sounds like something I'd relish.

Re: screamin' demon hybrid?

The Demon is such a great pup to use for hybrids. I like it better than 59s (which certainly makes for some really good hybrids also).

Re: screamin' demon hybrid?

A distortion N/demon hybrid for the neck position is what I'd like to try next. Just seems like it would match nicely with a hot, beefy bridge pu.

Re: screamin' demon hybrid?

The distortion neck and custom are both 43 awg, same as the demon. I'm not saying that they'd be bad hybrids, but they wont be like the typical "dual resonance" thing, like dimarzios or the 59/C. They would be more like a 78 or something where the coils are both wound with the same wire, but with different amounts. Theyll work fine, but won't be totally hum canceling.
