Does it pay to compare the sensitivity ratings of the two speakers? The sensitivity rating on the G12-65 is 97db, whereas the C-Rex is 102db. Maybe someone with more smarts or experience can translate those numbers into something meaningful.

I have a Peavey Blue Marvel in my Windsor Studio (a 15-20watt tube amp), and that speaker has a sensitivity rating of 96.3db. The C-Rex is quite a bit louder than the blue marvel...like maybe a couple notches on the master volume. Add to that less breakup coming from the speaker, and...

I think less speaker breakup makes for more versatility, though.

Re: Screw it, I'm Doing a Speaker Recommendation Thread

Thanks Jeremy and Brian for your opinions. I'm just gonna bump this one last time to see if anyone else can chip in on these two questions...

Could anyone give me a quick comparison of the 12-65 and the Cannabis Rex? They seem to be the front-runners here, and I'm curious about how they differ.

How much louder are we talking here? Like, yeah you'll notice a bit more volume, or yeah you'll need to get an attenuator?

I'm going to order something in the next day or two, so any opinions are really appreciated.

Thanks, guys. :beerchug:

Don't know if you've seen this comparison before Kam but here is a little speaker shootout that was done a few years ago.

I haven't tried the G12-65's but I can vouch for the G12H30's as being great all around speakers, clean or dirty. If they're good enough for Jimi Hendrix....you can bet your @$$ they're good enough for me.

Well I've never played a cannabis rex, but about the loudness, I have played 65s right next to a set of speakers that are 3db louder in sensitivity. They are louder. Not like you'll need an attenuator or anything, but you just get more volume before speaker breakup when using a high-sensitivity speaker

Think of it in terms of a 50W amp vs a 100W amp. The 50 can be just as loud as the 100W, but by the time the 50 reaches the designated volume of a 100W, it's breaking up more than the 100W is, because the 100W has more headroom.

It's a similar sorta experience with the difference in speaker sensitivities.

Put my vote in the C. Rex pile! That's a really great speaker. It's warm and smooth, but not dark. The high end on it is really awesome . . . clear and present, but never piercing. It's the speaker I have in my head when I think of a really great clean/slightly overdriven tone.

The C. Rex doesn't seem much louder than a V30 (I've got the two paired together at the moment) . . . and the v30 is a little louder than a G12M-70. It would probably be a noticeable increase in volume, but nothing that knocking the volume back a little wouldn't cure.

Re: Screw it, I'm Doing a Speaker Recommendation Thread

Thanks a lot to everyone for their help. It was sincerely appreciated.

I got sick of going around and around on this, so I just ordered a 112 cab with a WGS ET-65. If it doesn't work out, I might give the Rex a shot in a while, but hopefully it'll be a good match.

I did get terribly tempted by a little open back pine cab with a G12h-30, but I figured the one I ordered would probably be a better fit for me. I would've really liked to go for one of the Roadkill cabs, but unfortunately unexpected expenses (moving house is never straight ****ing forward) made it necessary for me to go with something cheaper.

It should be here by the end of the week, hopefully. There'll be a quick review and plenty of pictures when it arrives.

Thanks again for all your help and advice. :beerchug:

Re: Screw it, I'm Doing a Speaker Recommendation Thread

You should do well with the et65.

I have one by it self and one paired with a wgs retro 30. The retro is 3db louder with a brighter high end and a deeper low end. At lower volumes, both clean and dirty, i hear the retro more.
As it gets louder, they seem to balance out more.

IMO 3db is noticeable, and 5db is way louder.

Why can't manufacturers produce speakers that have sensitivity levels in the high eighties or low nineties? Seems like a better choice than an attenuator.

Oh, the et65 is a kickass speaker. My favorite.
