I have tried like hex screws in single coils before but not the traditional slotted screws. The ones I tried used ceramic bar magnets though too. Then there are p90s but those probably aren't what you mean.
Traditional fender style singles use rod magnets as poles themselves while pickups with screws for poles will often have a bar magnet of some kind underneath, so the poles/screws are made of some other material. So the design would way different from the ground up and it would hard to attribute any particular sound difference to the poles/screws specifically besides the individual output balance of each of the strings because they are adjustable.
I think the Stra-bro has 3 flathead screws in it.

Search is over http://riograndepickups.com/dirty-harry They sound bad ass too. They have 2 output levels if that one is too hot for you. But i dig the hell outta em.

It's good to know they work.
I think I'm going to try to meld an SSL-1 (maybe overwound) with a blade design. We'll see how it goes.

Which ever has more winds to it. Pole pieces do not create inductance they only direct the magnetic field that is there.

OK, for all of you who really want to know the definitive answer to this....
Like I said earlier, slugs have more mass than the screws. Just a casual look at them will tell you that unless the slug is made of aluminum and the screw is made of lead, the slug MUST have more mass than the screw. But for all of you non-believer die-hards...
Full length screw = 18.0 grains
Typical slug = 41.0 grains
Thus the slug has 2.3 times the mass of a screw!!! Not even close!

so... with all this talk of screws & slugs, I decided I wanted to try try hex screws in place of the fillister screws in my nazgul & sentient. So I pull one out of the stock Ibanez pickups and it's not a normal style screw Its a short threaded screw that's the same size from top to bottom.. SO I think OK, I'll just pull the ones from my Dimarzio d-activator... same thing !!! they are not like a your typical screw with a head then a smaller threaded shaft, they're almost like a threaded slug with a hex hole in the top.. weird.. I guess I'll have to order some that will fit if I want to try them.
