SD Antiquities but less expensive

I took out the Antiquities I had in my semi hollow body and put them in my LP Studio.( because I didn't like the Gibby 490R & T )
I loved the Ants in the semi but now my retired ass is having trouble ponying up for the Ants price.
Looking for a recommendation for a set of SD's that will provide a nice woody bluesy tone and when requested provide some Alvin Lee
juice. Can't afford high level pricing.
Thanks for any suggestions.
BP.

Re: SD Antiquities but less expensive

Why dont you just put them back in then?.....or do you think they sound better in the Les Paul??
Honestly, if it were me, Id put them back in and score another set of pickups for the Gibson, whether that be Antiquities or something else entirely like a set of Pearly Gates or a set of '59's for the bridge and neck.

(Im sure there are better choices than what I named, I just named a few off the top of my head.)

What kind of amp are you using?

Thanks. Yes I prefer my LP with the Ants
Now I can put the Gibby 490's in the semi hollow but I have my doubts about them doing the guitar justice. Like I mentuioned another set of Ants is too pricey.
That's why I'm looking for suggestions.

Re: SD Antiquities but less expensive

The Antiquitys have a very unique tone. Seth Lovers are similar and might come closest, but don't sound the same.

If you're patient you'll find a used set of Antiquitys on Reverb. You just have to be patient and wait it out.

They're great pickups. Nothing else I own (Seths, 59's, PG's, Tom Holmes...) sounds quite like them.

Re: SD Antiquities but less expensive

Yup. I agree with ya.
Maybe if I put the Ants back in the semi and put a set of Pearlys in the LP?
I'll have to check out the pricing and sounds of the PGs
Thanks Lew

Re: SD Antiquities but less expensive

I like Seth's much better than Ant's. If you haven't tried Seth's, you should.

Re: SD Antiquities but less expensive

Thank you. I'll do some research on the Lovers! Remember though I did say.....SD's that will provide a nice woody bluesy tone and when requested provide some Alvin Lee juice.

Re: SD Antiquities but less expensive

You can sort of get a similar vibe with '59s, and they are available used all day. Yeah, they aren't exactly close, but it is the closest from a regular production pickup we make.

Why would you say that Mincer?

I like 59's but stock, they're brighter, more mid scooped, seem to be more driving/louder, they use polished A5 vs. Aged A2...etc.

59's seem pretty different sounding to me.

Seths seem more similar to me, and although I haven't replaced the polished A2 magnet in a Seth with a roughcast A2, I would expect that if I did, it would make a Seth sound even more like an Antiquity.

Am I wrong about that?

Really, I think the Antiquity has a very unique tonal quality and personality that's all it's own.

I have a pair of PRS Custom 22 guitars: 59's in one and Antiquitys in the other. I love them both but they sound quite different from each other.

Re: SD Antiquities but less expensive

Well, we don't make many bridge pickups with the Antiquity profile (maybe Jazz bridge?) that is sort of scooped and clear. I *did* say it wasn't exact, but if cost is a factor (and it seems it is), you have to look at cheaper production pickups. Cheaper used production pickups point at the '59 or the much rarer (on the used market) Jazz bridge.

Swap some RCUOA5's into the 59's.

Re: SD Antiquities but less expensive

Thank you Mincer and to all contributors so far.
Now in doing some research to replace the Antiquities in my semi hollow body I have come across the Jazz neck pick up which to me seems to be ideal. My question is how would the JB perform in a semi hollow body ES335 clone?
I understand that the JB is said to be a perfect match with the Jazz. I was worried that perhaps because of it's high output the JB may not be well suited to a semi hollowbody.
Anybody use that combo in a semi hollow body ?
Thank you. BP

Just to let you know that the 59's, although not Antiquities ( not close really ) I did really like their sound in the SD clip.
May be just want I want in the semi hollow.

I think the JB is kind of a far stretch from what your looking for. It's also a very acquired taste. You might just be happy with a matched pair of pearly gates or A2 pro's

Re: SD Antiquities but less expensive

Thanks Joey. PG's in a semi hollow body?
BP.

Seths are similar sounding if you remove the covers. Which is easy because Seths are not wax potted.

I've never put Pearlys in a semi-hollow body...but I've thought about it.

How much are you going to save in dollars over Antiquitys? $60?

Just go with Antiquitys which you know you like.

Or find some Seths or Pearlys for your Les Paul and put the Antiquitys back in your semi hollow body.

Re: SD Antiquities but less expensive

Thanks Lew. I know you're right. The Ants in a semi hollow body are freaking magnificent.!
Being frugal it came down to the 59's or the A2 Pro's but I couldn't find a demo of the A2's in a semi hollow.
If I'm going whole hog I would do the PG's in my LP.
Aw well it's coming down to crunch time.! I'll dig deeper into the PG's and finally take the leap, one way or the other.
As usual this board has been great..
Thank you.
