SD Antiquity vs '78

Re: SD Antiquity vs '78

Lol I couldn't remember WHO it was! I've never sold a 78 before, so it wasn't me you got it from. I imagine wound tithe 10k point and combined with A2 it could sound a but congested. A 78 is bouncy....wouldn't call it squishy but you've got a different beast I imagine.

Sorry Luke my mistake, it was Terry Hanley/ Henley I got the overwound '78 off. Very strange pick though, it honestly sounded as though I had my Keeley Comp set high??? Not to worry... I sold both!

End of hi jack, sorry guys.:friday:

Related... but not exactly on topic. Do you think a 78 Bridge would sound good with a Antiquity neck?

That is the actual combo I ended up with in my Burny plaintop after trying all the pickups discussed here.

The aged cover also plays well with the naturally ages hardware.

I can tell you, however, that I ran into a bit of trouble when going to a friend's house and playing through his amp without being able to spend time dialing it in. It's a Mesa DC-5 and the '78 came out too sharp, and the neck pickup in a LP is always unusable if you don't dial it in.

The Ant is more open, a little weaker (not nigh and day by a long shot) and has that deep 3D character that Ants have...the 78 is a little hotter, a little sharper, more aggressive and compressed.I made this comparison with a pair of R8 Les Pauls, one with a set of Ants and one with a Seth/78 set.

I just bought the '78 AND a Antiquity bridge. I have to say I agree with the above quote. The 78 sure sounds more aggressive, more compressed and a litlle too sharp for my taste....The antiquity just sings.

UPDATE ;)

Been comparing the 2 pickups over and over again in the same guitar this afternoon.

What I still dislike somewhat dislike about the 78 are the hights. Ear-piercing when played at loud volume. Though the mids and lows are very very nice. Especially the mids are very single coil, open sounding.

The Antiquity definitly is a smoother sounding pickup, never ear piercing hights but overall a less powerful pickup. While it's a great pickup my guitar seems to like the 78 better.

Anyone tried a DEGAUSSED AII magnet in the '78?

Maybe that solves the hights problem somewhat?

Re: SD Antiquity vs '78

Was the Seth neck a good match with the '78?

I just put in a '78 that I pulled from another guitar into my Agile LP copy and love it in this guitar. Now I need something in the neck that complements it.

Re: SD Antiquity vs '78

I have Ants in a mid-90's LP 1960 Classic Plus, and I like them a lot. I haven't even bothered replacing the Gibson pots with an RS Kit yet. The guitar is just so smooth and sweet. I'm a Classic Rock and Blues player, but my cover band also does some Country and some Jazz. The Antiquitys easily cover all of this material--they're just great all-around pickups. They do have a smokey rich tone, like a fine aged cabernet. These are the 20 year old boubon, not the corn liquor you buy in a Mason jar that was distilled yesterday.

The BB 1&2 sets that I have in my LP Historics are close, but they don't have the complexity of the Ants. I think they may be closer to the Seth Lovers in this regard, another fine pickup. Another reason the BBs and my Ants sound different could be in the pots and caps--the 1960 Classic Plus I believe has 300K pots with the standard ceramic disc caps. I gotta get busy and swap those out.

The Ants may not be for everyone, but if you want classic LP tones for rock and blues, the Antiquitys are hard to beat.

I think it's a really good pairing. The Seth has a quackiness that matches up really well. Roll off some treble and it's as warm as the day is long.

Re: SD Antiquity vs '78

Anyone ever tried charging the A2 more on the Ants? I wonder.

Eh, I've not heard any of these pickups, but I know a 9-10K pickup with an A2 is not gonna be harsh. If the '78 wasn't so expensive I'd probably try one as my neck pickup.

Re: SD Antiquity vs '78

I have late 1950's paf magnets in a set of Antiquities in my R9. They are outstanding!

I have tried full strength A4 mags in them and it was O.K., but kinda sterile sounding.

Full strength mags in Antiquities are excellent pickups!
