SD Basslines Quarter Pound Review

As my first official gear post, I figured I would see what you guys thought about the new SD Basslines Quarter Pound SJB-3 pups I just bought. If anyone has any experience with them, or any of the Basslines models, let me know what you think.

As for my own review, I basically changed these out from the original stock Fender Original Jazz Bass® Pickups. Before we talk about sound, I have to say, compared to the especially dirty stock Fender pups, the SD's were immaculate. This right off the start tells me says more attention was payed to them, hence better quality. But regardless of the look, what I was originally looking for in a pickup was something which would provide a punch at the neck, all the while providing a clean tone at the bridge. I wanted to be able to have the bright sound of a jazz, all the while being able to blend with the music.

As a bassist, considering my inclination towards rock, blues and progressive music, I'm trying to hold the low end together all while blending in the mix. Basically the SJB-3 pups allow me to do just that. They give me the versatility I need on the low end. My only small complaint would be that due to the punch of the low end and the crispy and clean high ends, the mids, are somewhat neglected. Although I don't use the mids in band context as much, when I play alone, they allow me to cover more space.

Altogether, I give these pickups a solid 8.0/10. Take this for what its worth, I don't know as much as I would like about pups, but this is my 0.02$

Cheers,
J

What I like most about the quarter pounder since you have had them in the jazz is the way it seems to fill more of that lower register in the mix. Specially when coupled with a few guitars, it really seems like the quarter pounders fit in better, creating a stronger presence that gives an all around fuller band sound.

I agree that if your intension would be to play Victor Wooten style, this might not be the set, but for blues and rock it totally works.

thats the way i hear most qp pups, lots of bottom good top and fairly neutral mids

I knew this going into it to be totally honest. And I'm by no means disappointed or regretting the buy, just trying to communicate a more objective review really.

i think the qp's sound great, at least for some things. when i was doing my rock trio my bass player used qp's which worked great. i could have a big fat midrangey tone and he could still be heard clearly.

not the best for somethings but for rock i think they are great

Totally agree. And in my case particularly, my goals are not to stand out and be flashy, I simply wanna play the bassline and hold it together. So really, the QP's are good for what I want.

Oh and happy birthday Sir!

I agree 100%. Since Jay is rocking the QPs I have actually had to change my settings for playing. It's great, caus I don't have to bring my sound as high to get heard. I can just sit comfortably in the midrange with a little top end, and cut right through, specially with distortion.

Jay, I guess you would also agree that these helped clear up the mix, as now Nick (our other guitarist) can really hit the higher range, and everything seems to be less ''mushy'' when all 3 instruments are played together. From a guitarist point of view, that would be my appreciation of them.

I don't know what more you could want for rock than to clear up the mix and augment your presence at the same time.

Re: SD Basslines Quarter Pound Review

Thanks for the review. I will be picking up a bass (again) sometime soon, and it will probably be something cheap that will require some new pups. Blues and rock is exactly what I'd play!

Always wondered about bass QPs...
