never heard of that high impedance at a SD bridge pup - huge 26.95 kOhm.
neck pup reads 13.72 kOhms.

they are black painted at the bottom and only marked "N" and "B" handwritten.

the SD logo is smaller as at the actual ones.

any more information someone?

thx

Re: SD Black Backs 26.95 kOhm ?????

These are supplied to Ed Roman by Duncan.

That alone should tell you not to get near one.

Re: SD Black Backs 26.95 kOhm ?????

bob from ed roman told me that those were at 14,4 kOhm - bridge.

Re: SD Black Backs 26.95 kOhm ?????

i have a heritage fitted with those pickups and they sound fantastic. not as 'absolutely the best most amazing' that ed claims, but they are great pickups in that guitar

Re: SD Black Backs 26.95 kOhm ?????

I have one, Br, don't know ohms but it is very FAT. That one needs a very bright guitar to work.

Re: SD Black Backs 26.95 kOhm ?????

It's really dumb that he markets a Duncan pickup as the "Black Back", because they don't even make any such model. Go search the main Duncan site, and you won't find any information about Black Backs.

It's probably a standard Duncan pickup that Ed Roman orders with a black base plate. At 14.4k, it's probably a Custom, CC, or C5.

FWIW, DiMarzio has some pickups with black baseplates, and people (mistakenly) call them Black Backs, too.

Re: SD Black Backs 26.95 kOhm ?????

He has an exclusive contact with Duncan to build the Black Back to his specs, Mr. From Hell.

There was another thread about it a couple days ago with a link to the only spot on the Duncan site that mentions them. Makes it seem like some top secret black army secret service skull-n-bones humbucker.

no, it is not 14,4 - it is 26,95 kOhms
and sure no dimarzio.
it's a custom pup that isn't offered by SD, but they made it:

http://www.seymourduncan.com/support/faq/frequently-asked/everything-else/lsr_guitarsblac/

it is right, they are very fat in a les paul, but with right adjustment they sound great!
not that tight in bass as i get used to it, but very big.
i'll test them with higher pots and new wiring - that will work!

Re: SD Black Backs 26.95 kOhm ?????

I've been following Ed Roman's site for years. Here's the history of the Blackback pickups- which could be right or wrong, but this is what was on Ed Roman's web site.

Ed Roman took the pickups out of an EB/MM EVH/Axis, and sought to have them copied . He called them black backs due to the black backs on the Dimarzio pickups. Initially, I saw his advertise that Dimarzio was making his Black Back pickups for him.

However, Dimarzio makes the EVH/Axis pickups exclusively for EBMM- you can't buy them from Dimarzio. If you ask Dimarzio for these pickups, they tell you the Tone Zone/Air Norton set is very close, and the EVH pickups are tweaked versions of this set. So I doubt Dimarzio would make a direct copy of a pickup they won't sell to the public.

Roman didn't sell the Dimarzios for long, and soon had Seymour Duncan making them. Whether they are the same design, I don't know. I do know that no one with Black Backs is claiming to get an EVH tone out of them.

Wow. Good post.

RE: the last sentence; People seem to have a hard time getting EVH tone with the gear that he DOES use. :D

Re: SD Black Backs 26.95 kOhm ?????

there is fat "seymour duncan" written on top!

Yes, fine, we understand that and no one has said these were not made by Seymour Duncan. All that's been said is these are made by Seymour Duncan exclusively FOR Ed Roman - Ed Roman is the only one who can buy these.

As for your 26K reading, isn't that what happens to a pickup when it goes bad? The numbers double what they should be?

Re: SD Black Backs 26.95 kOhm ?????

I have a pair of Black Backs that I pulled out of a Roman Quicksilver. I just measured them at about 14k bridge and 7.6k neck.

Any other forensics I can do on these?

Re: SD Black Backs 26.95 kOhm ?????

I have the EBMM pickups in an Axis. They sound Super Distoirtion-ish in a gainy way. Black back doesn't sound that way as much, but definitely a higher output pup and again, FAT. Had it first in an alder Super Strat and I hated it. In a very bright LP it works nicely IF the amp isn't too transparent.
