SD bridge humbucker close to Doug Aldrich?

Does seymour duncan make a HB that will sound anything close to Doug Aldrich? I know it's important to have a crancked Marshall and his technique blah blah blah. But is there anything SD makes that will get me in the ball park? I was thinking the custom. But I'm Looking to put it in the bridge of my les paul, the A2P in there right now is just too smooth for me.

Well, I don't know what Doug used back in the day, but he's been using Suhr humbuckers for years. Either his signature Aldrich bridge or the Suhr SSH+ would do the job. I've had several different Suhr pickups and IME, they have a different sound and feel than Duncan pickups. However, having said all that, I don't think a Custom would be a bad place to start in terms of Duncan's lineup.

Well, I don't know what Doug used back in the day, but he's been using Suhr humbuckers for years. Either his signature Aldrich bridge or the Suhr SSH+ would do the job. I've had several different Suhr pickups and IME, they have a different sound and feel than Duncan pickups. However, having said all that, I don't think a Custom would be a bad place to start in terms of Duncan's lineup.

If you look at the specs of the Aldrich, assuming that its' A5, with about 17.75K worth of winding. I'm guessing that they're using 44AWG wire, like the SD JB.

I've never played an Aldrich, but going by specs on paper, and what a few people have said on some other forums, I'd say a JB would be the closest. Just my guess.

what about a distortion?

I read a few specs on the Aldrich and yes it's an alnico V mag, 17.75K and is described to have a "tight bottom, loads of mids (upper) and a rounded top end. /it almost sounds like a cross between a CC and a JB

Don't get me wrong, I love my JB, but I've also heard statements along the lines of "a better JB" on some other forums, for whatever that's worth.

The Aldrich is nothing like a JB. It's very thick and even, not peaky like the JB. I think the JB is Duncan's best known high-output pickup, so every other high-output pickup out there tends to get compared to it. I think the generally sound is much closer to something from the Custom series, like all the best attributes of the various Custom pickups blended together perhaps.

Maybe he used to use one. I was thinking the CC would probably be pretty good because it's so thick like the Aldrich. The Aldrich is "ruder" though, probably as all result of feeling less compressed. Really, if you have the technique and the the rest of the signal chain, you could probably throw just about any higher output pickup in your guitar, set your eq accordingly and sound almost exactly like him!

I've had the JB, Custom, Custom Custom and Suhr Aldrich all in my LP Custom. The Aldrich sits somewhere between the Custom and CC. The JB is nothing like the Aldrich. It's not quite as rough as the Custom but it's got more top end than the Custom Custom. If I had to choose a Duncan pickup that gets closest I would say the Custom with the tone rolled back a bit and that would only be for aggressive tones with some gain. But the biggest thing about the Aldrich is that it is much more sensitive to dynamics than any Duncan I've ever used. It will get aggressive and mean if you bear down but it responds more like a traditional or vintage output humbucker if you back off a bit. It also sounds much better split and with the volume backed down a bit. It is by far my favorite humbucker and I don't see it ever coming out of the guitars I've put it into. That's four guitars if we're counting.

So if you say between a CC and C.....then would that be a C5? or still more like the C as you said?

I don't care for the C5 at all. There's something missing in the mids for me in that pickup. The Custom will get you close in a dark or muddy sounding guitar and a CC will work in a bright guitar. I would try a Custom with a 300k volume pot or just spend a little more and get the Suhr.

ya i already got a CC for my maple body kramer (very bright guitar). I havent put it in yet.

Im thinking about the custom for the bridge spot of my les paul. Would that be a good choice?

I like the Custom in a Les Paul. If it hits a little hard or gets harsh at all you can roll back the tone just a touch or install a 300k or even 250k pot. Even getting the pickup away from the strings a bit can warm it up if needed. But if you are looking for a crunchy yet fat tone it's hard to beat the Custom.

I've never used a Dimebucker so I can't compare it to the Custom. I generally don't care for ceramic magnet pickups but I like the Custom.
