SD bridge humbucker close to Doug Aldrich?

Re: SD bridge humbucker close to Doug Aldrich?

Mark Cameron did the mods on Doug's old Marshalls. He isnt offering his mod service anymore....which is a shame.

Ya it looked like doug was playing through plexi's in that youtube video from '05 and he is getting the most distortion ive ever heard someone get from a plexi (other than EVH). Do you know by any chance what the mods were?

Re: SD bridge humbucker close to Doug Aldrich?

I like several of the Duncan pickups. I think the Full Shred rocks in a LP for what I play, so did the Distortion and Custom, but I've got an Aldrich in one of mine now and it aint coming out, ever. Archer is the one that turned me on to it. He knows his stuff.

Re: SD bridge humbucker close to Doug Aldrich?

To answer your question, yes, that was a CC in that guitar. I asked Doug about that guitar on his forum and he said that it had a Duncan Custom Custom. So straight from the horse's mouth.

is his marshalls the reason why his tone is kinda on the brighter side? from the DVD footage, his tone with the CC seems very thick, but almost has a high mid peek. I know most ppl hate the CC in LP's because it's too dark......Does a Marshall balance out the darkness?

Re: SD bridge humbucker close to Doug Aldrich?

According to what Doug told me, he liked the CC, because it tamed the highs on his marshall amps. I used my CC with a Mesa Mark IV with great success.

do you have a link to that forum by any chance?

Re: SD bridge humbucker close to Doug Aldrich?

As I have been stating on here the secret weapon for these guy's tones was due largely to their ability to play, and then largely to the use of the Furman PQ3. I imagine they could pickup ANY guitar and sound like themselves on it.

Check post #50 for a pic of Doug's PQ3 settings.

It is somebody who was spec'ing his rig and the PQ3 settings so that people would understand what mid freqs he was boosting.

Go on youtube and there is a guy on there that does Dime's setup...and he shows you what the rig sounds like before and after driving the amps with an eq and in the loop...pretty cool demo.

Just do a search for Dime's rig on Youtube..if I stumble across it again I will post it up for you. I am going to go noodle around for a bit.

Because of you guys (this board) I am switching back and forth between my two guitars trying to figure out which tone I like better. This summer I am guest guitaring with a couple of bands for their 80's segments...they cover 70-90s rock/pop.

I will have to see which one sounds better playing with the other instruments playing..because it changes drastically.....just listen to George Lynch live and you will under the challenges....it takes a lot to sound good live.

so for a lot of big guitar players, is there a lot of stuff behind the scenes that we dont see on the stage? like rigs for example? that have a big part of their specific sound?

Go over to www.metroamp and look at the thread called Eddie Van Halen's 78' Rig...he was doing all sorts of stuff way ahead of the curve too...it was because Van Halen was playing live high schools and back yard parties way before they got into the studio...they had to develop their sound live...same with AC/DC, and many others. I have heard bands that actually can sound better live (to me) then their studio stuff. Iron Maiden and Rush have sounded better to me live (and I was sober) at times then what they have sounded like in the studio.

There is a lot more to it then an Amp and Guitar...the guy who produces has a lot to do with it as well...the mix'r man seems to get lost in the equation a lot.

Re: SD bridge humbucker close to Doug Aldrich?

I had a Suhr Aldrich in my LP for a good while. I'll say that it sounds NOTHING like a CC, but closer to a Custom.

You seem to want to like the CC and like the tone from his CC period. So try the CC. If you arent thrilled, convert to a Custom. And if that doesnt thrill you, convert to a C8 and have that Heavenly tone...

HMMMM I never really cared for the CC.. BUT.... Never tried one since I got the Marshall... Maybe a diff ballgame.

sounds pretty amazing in that clip posted..

Well I have the 598 in my Retta and the C8 in my ESP. The pup that I liked the best...all around was the CC both in my ESP and the Retta. So after I am done playing around and my PQ4 that I ordered comes in the mail. I will probably switch both guitars over to the CC...and keep the old one (aged A2) in the CC that will be in the Retta.

I really like the C8 because it is like a louder CC..but I don't need it that loud....I can do that with my amp and eq, I like the 598 because it boost the 59 up and it has sweet characteristics to it...clarity and harmonics..but as some say it sounds like a note with distortion versus a distorted note (med output).

I have determined I like pups with an output between 9-14....and that will do it for my playing. The DD did not sound as good in as the CC in by ESP or my Baretta.

I was aslo thinking about the IM1 but is pretty much a CC. I also like the way Steve Steven's sounds on the demo of the BKP VHII pup..but don't need to be ordering and waiting from a manufacturer in the UK.
