Re: SD CUSTOM CUSTOM please shed some light

The content over of the official site pretty much covers it:

application
High output humbucker for use in bright guitars. Great for pop, country, blues, classic rock and heavy rock.

description
The Custom CustomTM is our SH-5 Duncan CustomTM humbucker with an Alnico II magnet for warm and smooth highs, more midrange, and a spongier bottom end than the SH-5. It's a good choice for players who need a traditional vintage tone with increased output. Comes with four-conductor hookup cable.

complete setup
Recommended for bridge position. Often a Custom Custom is paired with a Pearly Gates for bluesy P.A.F. tones in the neck.

guitars
For brighter toned instruments. Works especially well with maple and ebony fingerboards.

With an A2 magnet, it's pretty warm (hence the common recommendation for bright woods) and has a loose low end. You're wanting to put it in a mahogany guitar with drop D tuning. I don't see that as the best PU for you. I think the Custom (SH-5) is better for what you want. It's basically the same coils with a ceramic magnet.

Well the good news is you will not need to dial in any mids, actually you might be dialing some out, as the sh-11 has MONSTER MIDS. There's a video on youtube with a guy playing the sh-11 in his les paul, check that out, will give you a good idea. I just dropped one in my epiphone explorer and I love it.

Re: SD CUSTOM CUSTOM please shed some light

hey guys thanks for your replies...
well the problem is ive always stayed away from ceramic magnets...but maybe ill try... i dunno i was thinking clint lowery of sevendust uses custom custom on his prs custom as well and they are tuned to drop b...thats why i was intrigued in using it... another pickup a friend of mine is telling me to check out is the mark morton dominion pickup which also has a lot of mids according to them... but again ceramic magnet... im not saying ceramic magnets are bad... im just not educated much on them..ive always used alnico V's because they are warmer..according to the builders... its nice to know that the custom custom has MONSTER mids :)

Re: SD CUSTOM CUSTOM please shed some light

I have an on again off again relationship with the CC...currently we are off!

The deal with the CC is this...at least to my ears!

Depending on the amp and guitar being used you get a sound that is either fat and warm or a sound that is honky and dull.

but it can do metal right? im not into the whole scooped metal thing anyway...the amp is a mesa mark v and mesa triple rectifier

Re: SD CUSTOM CUSTOM please shed some light

I think of it as being a smoother/warmer JB. The CC seems to be popular with doom metal. It also doesn't have much bass, which I like, and while some would call it flubby, I find it a lot better with bass rolled back with a bit more treble. Mids on the amp are just whatever works.

For Drop D you should be fine, I play in Eb and don't have any problems. It might also help to use higher tension wound strings if the low end is slightly too loose. I also advise playing around with the pickup and polepiece height to fine-tune it.

i have to say Custom custom have been my favourite pickup

Dont have a Mark V but ive been using it through a Mesa DC 3,JCM and a Fender deluxe reverb

it sounds amazing!

Big fat warm tone and for lead work it really can cut thru the mix

Metal?no problem but dont expect it to have that "mid scooped" sounds since its not designed to sound that way...

Re: SD CUSTOM CUSTOM please shed some light

The CC is a beautiful pick up but in my experience not the best for the chugga chugga which is why I replaced it. Smooth highs, nice mids, loose and mellow lows. It doesn't really punch through for tight palm mutes and if you want it to even come close you REALLY have to work hard at it. (Adding stuff to your rig, tone, etc.) It's best used for rock/hard rock/blues/classic rock kind of like SD suggests.

Can it do metal? Sure. Can you use a butter knife to turn a screw? Sure. However, you're much better off using the right tool for the job. =) For drop D chugga chugga I'd go with the regular Custom all day. The DD or PATB-2 are also great choices. Don't let the ceramic magnets turn you off.

CC=///=big tight sound

In fact...to my ears big and tight are oftentimes mutually exclusive unless you're just talking about volume.

The CC has a round, thick, warm, SOARING sound. It's like the JBs younger brother who is a strength trainer where the JB is a "what'd you call me?" wiry scrapper of sorts.

For a tighter aggressive sound that will sound very fat on the low strings and sting on the highs the Duncan Distortion is my pick. I have it in my CU24 and run it into a Modded 2204 and Tweed Head. Sounds fantastic...and I never thought I'd like the sound of ceramics either.

I've been told that for all out girth and huge tone the Alternative 8 in a PRS is almost impossible to beat.

Hope that didn't confuse you TOO much. If I were in your spot those would be the 2 I'd consider other than a CC.

Re: SD CUSTOM CUSTOM please shed some light

The CC is one of my fav bridge pickups. It takes a whole lot of the sonic spectrum, so it is great with 1 guitar bands. However, it is too loose for chuggings. Go for the regular Custom, the C5 or the DD.

hehhe a friend called me and said just go with a sd jb,,,

Re: SD CUSTOM CUSTOM please shed some light

The JB is certainly an option and many metal bands have used it. However, it is a bit looser and less aggressive on the low end. For tight chug and also lead work the Distortion/Custom/PATB-2 are hard to beat. All of those actually sound pretty good clean too, despite the ceramic and higher output. My take anyway, the JB is a really cool pick up, just wouldn't be my option for drop D chugging.
