Gentlemen . . .

. . . at first this will seem like a stupid question, but I truely do not know the diffs between the two :oo

According to the site, they are BOTH Hi Output PUs, so what is the tonal diffs then ?

I need a S/C pu, both neck and bridge to replace the stock unnits found on a twin S/C Melody Maker, to get MORE of a cripsp S/C tone of a Tele !!!

But the Tele style SD PUs will NOT fit into the bridge pos, due to the routing/cavity of the MMs body !

Any info will be great

Thanx to all

Re: SD Hot Rails vs. Cool Rails ?

The Cool Rail is more like a vintage HB and the Hot Rails is a very aggressive HB. If you are looking for a Tele tone in a Strat pickup check out the Duncan Twangbanger and the Rio Grande Stelly.

Re: SD Hot Rails vs. Cool Rails ?

I have a friend that has a modified s/c Melody Maker and I have done a bit of work on it.

First off, are you sure a std s/c pickup will fit properly? Seems to me the Gibby singles were a little larger than the Fender style pickups so make sure the new singles will mount properly before you commit to them.

As far as Tele tones go from that guitar, the Twangbanger is a good call. I'd match that with a rw/rp pickup from the SSL line, depending on how hot and how warm you want your tone to be.

Re: SD Hot Rails vs. Cool Rails ?

I would say that the Cool Rails has slightly less output, and is overall a bit bluesier and bassier than the Hot Rails. The sound of the CR tends to be a bit more round than the HR as well, the HR being a bit more aggressive has a more "square" sound than the CR.

With distortion, the HR seems to a bit more cutting edge while the CR seems a tad more vintage. Both are VERY similar though, I've noticed my tech recommend one or the other to various players depending on who it is.

He seems to recommend the HR to the younger players though...

Re: SD Hot Rails vs. Cool Rails ?

I have no experience with the cool rails, but I can tell you that I like hot rails.

Re: SD Hot Rails vs. Cool Rails ?

hot rails can sound a little ceramic-ey to me. cool rails respond better to playing styles than hot rails, and have a pretty cool vibe in the neck position. or in the middle with the treble side lower for a nice rhythm sound. i haven't tried CR in the bridge though.

Perluss Whun.

HR/CR/HR

Overall, I like the CR better. 'Cause it's :cool3:

:joke:

As said before, the CR seems a bit more versatile. Very warm tone overall.

Re: SD Hot Rails vs. Cool Rails ?

Having played the Squier Hot Rails Strat (granted, the pickups are Duncan Designed), I'd say it doesn't have enough brights for me. I was playing it in a store with a Fender GDEC or whatever that amp is. It's a good pickup, just not enough clarity and high end for me. It did good in the bridge though.

Because of this, I'd go with the cool rails, and I'm actually hoping to assemble a guitar soon to test this out :D
