SD JB + Gibson P-94R = Out of Phase?

Hi,

I'm very happy with my JB, specially when coil-tapped. I would however like to try a P-94R in the neck to pair up with that.

Since I don't want to be opening up either pickup to invert magnets, I'd like to know beforehand, as much as possible, if this combination would be out of phase.

The last time around I paired an SD (Antiquity) with a Gibson (Iommi), they were out of phase... and I would like to avoid that.

Thanks in advance for info and opinions.

I think they are. If so, just switch the black wire with the green wire on th JB and you'll be OK.

According to the SD FAQ, SD pickups can be a direct replacement for Gibsons.

I think that it means you won't have to rout out your axe to put them in. :burnout:

I don't think so, because after that it goes on to talk about which manufacturers' pickups SD's are out of phase with.

Can Seymour Duncan pickups be mixed with other manufacturers' pickups?
Yes, Seymour Duncan pickups are compatible with other manufacturers' pickups. With Gibson and some other brands Seymour Duncan pickups are a direct replacement. With Fender and some other brands the polarity of one of the pickups needs to be changed, either by flipping a magnet or simply switching the hot and ground wire connections of the Seymour Duncan pickup inside the guitar.

When combining Seymour Duncan pickups with PRS pickups it is sometimes necessary to flip the magnet in the Seymour Duncan pickup and to use an alternate four conductor wiring.

Seymour Duncan active pickups are also not compatible with EMG active pickups unless some type of phase inverter is used.

Re: SD JB + Gibson P-94R = Out of Phase?

Seymour Duncan humbuckers are the same as Gibson humbuckers in wind direction and polarity. The Iommi model might be an exception but I don't know why Gibson would suddenly change up for that model.

P-90s and P-94s may be something else completely and I don't have the info or experience to speak to that. Fortunately the JB is a 4 conductor model and the phase can be changed by the wiring described above. No magnet flipping is needed in this case.

Nice to see you guys are getting good use out of the FAQs section.

Extremely valuable information in those things.....a long read too!!! :)

Thanks to all for your inputs! It's comforting to know beforehand that only wire switching will be involved. Your quick responses are very much appreciated! Happy New Year to everyone on the board!
