SD pot vs. YJM pot?

I did not hear anything about this before. Can someone tell me the diff between this and the Yngwie pot?

Re: SD pot vs. YJM pot?

SD pot is velvety and smooth, YJM is fast and light with almost no resistance at all when turning the pot. No use as beta. Along with all the other tolerances, we specified the torque tension we wanted on the SD pot. Yngwie's pot was conceived when I saw that he used old Japanese potentiometers, ripping them from some guitars to put into others. I had some old Ibanez's with these pots and donated a few to the cause when we were sending him loaded pickguards during the YJM Fury development. I said "why don't we just make an Yngwie pot that feels the way he wants?" and now you can buy it.

I usually prefer the smoother feel of the SD pots myself, but on a Strat, where you can't really get as much pinky grip on the lightweight knob, I love the reduced torque of the YJM.

Thanks for the info. Can you tell me which has the better taper for the volume swells on higher gain, when rolling up the volume for the violin effect? I hate when they jump too fast.

I know Yngwie likes to do that a lot, so I'd imagine his pots will be good for that technique.

Re: SD pot vs. YJM pot?

Both pots have the same taper. Both are equally volume-swell friendly. Seymour does volume swells all the time and as it turns out, the pots in his original Tele-Gib are the old blue can Bourns.

To me, I can't disconnect the lube tension from the volume swell equation. If a pot is too stiff, I don't care about the taper spec, it's not fun to do volume swells, and I can't do them fast enough without a reduction of enjoyment. While too loose is never really a problem for me, on a guitar with a big heavy metal dome knob, the YJM pot can really flop around. In fact, if you whip the metal knob on all the way to "10" really fast, the YJM pot can actually recoil and bounce back to "9". Not a problem with plastic knobs, also not a problem for me because I just ride the knob with my pinky a lot anyway.
