SD PUP equivalent to PRS HFS

Re: SD PUP equivalent to PRS HFS

The closest would be the Custom. But the Custom is warmer than the HFS so you won't get that nasally sound. In my mind the HFS is a cross between a custom and an underwound distortion. I replaced mine in my PRS the day I got it. Any particular reason you aren't just getting an HFS?

Any similarities between a JB and a HFS? How about between the Vintage Bass and a Jazz?

There IS an upper midrange spike, but the JB isn't as grainy sounding.

The jazz doesn't have NEAR the bass that the Vintage Bass does, at least to my ears. The closest you'd come would be a 59. That's what I've got in my CU24. I'll eventually put in a 59B with an A2 mag to darken it a bit more.

No particular reason except the HFS are a bit pricey. I was wondering if SD had one that was practically an exact replica of the HFS. There is a guitarist I jam with who has a PRS with HFS, and they always sound so good.

Really? I always thought they sounded thin! :laugh2:

It just goes to show what people hear can be so radically different.

The JB would give you that mid spike, but not the graininess or agression.

Now I have doubts about buying the HFS. Makes me think that other guy is just a better player than I am.

I'ld really like to get something hot, but does well when coil tapped sounding very stratty. I had JB's at one time, and coil tapped did not sound stratty.

Honestly you aren't going to get a real "stratty" tone from split bucker. The JB, C5, or Custom Custom are going to be the closest you are going to get.

I thought the Custom Custom sounded pretty alright split, but it has a LOW mids spike instead of the high mids spike like the HFS and JB.

I've always thought the HFS sounded pretty damn good.

Re: SD PUP equivalent to PRS HFS

Well, I have a Brian Moore guitar, and I put a JB in it which was nice. But I thought a PRS pickup would be good so, I put Dragons in, but they seem a little sterile to me, so now I want to switch to something hotter, so I was thinking of HFS. I guess mainly because a fellow guitarist has a PRS with HFS, and it sounds so good.

Which Dragons? I or II?

What are the attributes of it that you like?
