SD SH-5 Custom Is The One

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Is The One

Of course, you'll need more than just a pickup to get there.

Looking at the amp, you're gonna need a Marshall plexi-type spec similar to these values:

Split cathode V1a 250uF/820, V1b .68/820
All coupling caps are 0.022uF,Bright channel coupling cap is 0.0022uF
bright cap on vol pot 0.005uF
470k mixer resistors
500pF mixer bypass cap
Bypass cap on V2a is .68uF and a 220uf to 470uf
33k/500pF tone stack combo
100k NFB resistor at 4 ohm tap
220k bias splitter resistors
0.1 uF cap on presence control
.022uf output couplers

(the above are the actual values of the real thing)

The cool thing about my JTM45 is much of this was already taken care of (I had modded it to a '66 spec previously).
I didn't get all the values exactly according to the list however; for example, my negative feedback resistor is 47K IIRC and on the 8 ohm tap.
For my amp, 100K / 4ohm tap was way too constipated with gain. So not every amp will fit the template and you
may have to adjust.

And of course, if you have a PTP board, changing values out is a breeze compared to PCB.

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Is The One

The late 70's called. They want their "tone" back.

Warning: 70's obsession in 2015 above

The brown sound: now available with adult diapers for those still chasing it in the 2000's

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Is The One

I find it ironic that EVH himself has, for all these years, either kept quiet or purposely mislead people about his gear to prevent boring copycats, yet it seems like EVH posers are the most common type of posers in the guitar world.

+1 to this

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Is The One

I don't have a problem with the thread. After all, we talk about what interests us. But, and maybe I'm the odd man out here, I've never found anything particularly interesting about Eddie's "tone" per se. It's the sound of a distorted electric guitar. I can pretty much get that with any guitar and distortion/OD pedal that I have.

The thing I liked about EVH was his technique/style and more importantly, the musical compositions. I like many VH songs, but not all. They pretty much all have the same "tone".

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Is The One

I don't think he's claiming to be that. But the EVH brown thing has long ago been beaten to death on just about every guitar forum.

Just following in the footsteps of all the great players and tones from the 60's. Trying to catch up with how often "woman tone" has been analyzed, you know.

I haven't seen that anywhere near as much, and the usual advice is to duplicate it is to turn down the tone control. All of the brown sound threads here though; been rehashed so many times most members seem to be burnt out about talking about it anymore.

It seems like it would be easy enough to avoid reading and commenting on these threads if people didn't want them floating to the top, instead of slinging mud and refreshing the thread in the process. I'm not often up for rehashing this myself, but I feel no sympathy for the haters, the hatahs, or even the h8ahs.

Al Gore also invented the Brown Sound.

LOL @ the TMRZoo.com Troll Team trying their darndest to troll this thread up and down.

(Seriously... you kids will have to come up with a newer, mo' better strategy)

For those who have no interest in the topic - go to another thread that features your favorite Dave Matthews Band tone.

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Is The One

The great thing about this pickup (the SH-5 Custom) is it retains its clarity when you turn on the distortion.

The ceramic magnet is the key to that.

It also shockingly cleans up real well; especially if you put a .001uf on the volume knob.

In fact, it is by far the most dynamic pickup in terms of "turn the vol knob down, get clean - turn the vol knob up, get distortion".

In other words I can go from glassy, chimey cleans to raging inferno distortion with just a twist of the volume knob.

Thanks, but I'm good.

Re: SD SH-5 Custom Is The One

A few years back, Ed along with Matt, his tech, and Chip Ellis, a master builder from FMIC, spent a couple of days with us to do some tone research. While Ed was auditioning different pickups at full volume in the SD sound room, he was playing various riffs and song snippets. But he seemed particularly drawn to Jimmy Page licks. And he played them perfectly--no surprise. You would've thought it was Page himself.

That's when I realized that just like so many Baby Boomer guitarists who have meticulously sought out Ed's tone, Ed must have been doing the same thing with Page's. Maybe it doesn't mean much, but it puts things in a certain perspective. And kind of closes the circle, in a way.
