SDUG Ultimate Axe; SUPERSTRAT Entrees

Aceman

I am your doctor of love!
The title says it all. Now - super start is a 'relative term' as anything beyond a 3 single five way switch with standard trem COULD be considered a Superstrat. But general characteristics include a few (minimum, whatever a few is...) of the following:

- Unusual pup configs - HSS, HSH, HxH, HHx, Hxx, HxS, etc...
- Locking Trem
- 22+ frets
- Killer tops, wood or graphics
- Bling; Gold Tuners, custom guards, etc...

And whatever else. It might be a Shred axe, a Jazzer, or even a Fender Lonestar IMO is a Superstrat (barely...)

Heck - even that Suhr Tele was almost a Superstrat....

Let loose the dogs of war!!!!!!!

Re: SDUG Ultimate Axe; SUPERSTRAT Entrees

Been waiting for this one, looks like I'm first cab off the rank.

People have seen it lots, but to reiterate: '86 Ibanez PL1770, alder body, maple/ebony neck. Significant work done by moi - new scratchplate, screws here and there, pots, SDs (SSL2 x 2, 59/C).

Re: SDUG Ultimate Axe; SUPERSTRAT Entrees

Perfect; Floyd, HB, Reverse slants, Master Vol/Tone, and a batch of little buttons. That's pretty super.

Fully in the Spirit of the category!

Re: SDUG Ultimate Axe; SUPERSTRAT Entrees

I've entered this one before and I'll do it again. 1988 Kramer Baretta, single reverse-zebra JB, single volume control, Original Floyd Rose, maple/rosewood neck. The graphic was painted by Dennis Kline. This is one of my two best sounding guitars and it resonates like mad.

Re: SDUG Ultimate Axe; SUPERSTRAT Entrees

For you consideration, I humbly submit my Ibanez RGR320EX GAR (Gold Arctic Frost). This model was a limited edition run of the RG 300 series from 2007-2008 featuring some eye-catching "splatter" paint designs. But I have modded this guitar through the years to be super versatile and therefore more than just eye candy. This guitar quickly became my main guitar and the herd has been thinned since acquiring him.

Modifications (all performed by yours truly) include:

- installation of a Tremol-No in the back spring cavity. This allows me to easily do Drop D while still retaining capability to do dives with the trem bar. That's Super Strat like, isn't it?

- the stock neck pup being swapped out for a Dimarzio Humbucker From Hell. This mod not only makes the neck-only position much more useable in a variety of scenarios, but also gives the position 2 of the 3 way switch sound more like that Strat notched tone than it would have otherwise. Those Position 2 tones are also helped by the bridge pup it is comboed with being relatively low in output (7.4 dc resistance) and by the bridge pup being relocating 8mm towards the middle position (see below).

- installation of a Roland GK-3 pickup and interface unit. This required me to mod the guitar in four ways: 1) file the front end of the bridge cavity so its width would be increased by 8mm (so the bridge pup could be relocated closer to the neck just so that the GK3 pup would have enough room to fit between it and the bridge/tremolo unit - see 2nd pic), 2) drill four new holes to affix the relocated bridge pup (see 2nd pic), 3) drilling two new holes to mount the GK3 pickup (ref. 1st pic), and 4) drilling a hole off-center on the guitar's bottom side edge to hold the GK3 interface unit in place (ref 1st pic - see how the unit sits off-center) - Roland advises that you secure the interface with the pre-existing strap pin - but if you do that, the interface sits too close to the Floyd's fine-tuners and makes it difficult to reach those fine-tuners - so it became necessary to drill a new hole to so the interface could reside clear of the bridge fine tuners.

- final touch modification: for the jumper cable that connects the guitar output to the 1/4" input of the GK3 interface unit (again, ref. the first pic), I spray painted the stock silver colored metal ends of the cable to black, to match the black hardware of the guitar

As I mentioned earlier, this is my main guitar. Following is a link to a video showcasing the GK3 pup/Roland GR-20 synth sounds of this guitar on a recent home-recording project I did (e.g. overlaid a synth solo on top of my friend's original song): http://youtu.be/eX95KQ13IKE

In summary, I believe this guitar has killer looks plus sound and performance capabilities of a Strat and beyond -a true "super" Strat.

Mine :bling:
8 yrs, 100's of gigs and still my number 1.

Now with Duncan's.. Custom Shop JB !!

Re: SDUG Ultimate Axe; SUPERSTRAT Entrees

And here's my submission. She was custom made for me by a local luthier! She sports a 22 fret (6105) 12"-14" compound fretboard of rosewood w/Jem-style inlay on a flame maple neck, with a flame-maple top on alder. She's got a Custom 5 in the bridge and a Custom Shop made Hot '59 in the neck. The tone knobs are push/pull to split each pickup individually. Plays and sounds like a dream!

Re: SDUG Ultimate Axe; SUPERSTRAT Entrees

And shaping up to be a great race!

I wouldn't eliminate any yet....

Re: SDUG Ultimate Axe; SUPERSTRAT Entrees

Nothing compared with the bling already shown, but I present my neck-thru Carvin. Purchased for a steal because its missing 1 washer from the trem system. I'm really no speed player at all, but this thing just flies.

Re: SDUG Ultimate Axe; SUPERSTRAT Entrees

This was the closest thing I had to a "number one" for a few years. It still stands out from the pack today.

Ibanez SAS36FM in Transparent Grey.
+ Mahogany body
+ Set 3-piece maple neck with smooth heel, bound rosewood fretboard, 22 fret
+ Flamed maple top and matching headstock, abalone binding
+ HSS pickups with 1 volume, 1 tone, push-pull coil split
+ SAT Pro tremolo (ironically, I just adjusted this from dive-only to balanced this past weekend.)
+ No locking anything, anywhere, and it doesn't need them either

Re: SDUG Ultimate Axe; SUPERSTRAT Entrees

^^ I admit I was expecting an RS315 from you but that one's not too shabby :).

Some excellent guitars so far.

For you consideration, I humbly submit my Ibanez RGR320EX GAR (Gold Arctic Frost)...

Interesting, first time I've seen a quarter sawn neck on an Ibanez. I don't know anything about the GK system, but I presume it is able to track trem usage well?

Brownie points for reverse headstock :cool2:.

Thanks for the compliments!

I don't know for certain because I have not tried it, but based on my knowledge that the Roland GR-20 synth unit has foot switch controlled modes for triggering glissando type pitch changes against a note that is held steady on the guitar, I would say that either the GK3 pickup cannot deliver the level of detail necessary to yield a smooth and accurate glissando, or the GR-20 synth unit cannot adequately interpret the GK3 pickup's changing, microtonal output if you the player are changing the note via the trem bar. *But* the GR-20 is not "current" technology - the GR-55 replaced it as of about 2010, and there one or two other synth unit manufacturers on the market as well...

*EDIT* I'm just curious: what synth-type sounds are you envisioning wanting to employ a glissando-type pitch change against? I.e. a keyboard type sound? A strings-type sound? Etc
