Sealed speaker cabs: Ever tried one?

In the interests of tone and stage volume control, this idea has crept up. One of our guitarists tried closing his cab yesterday, with reasonable results.

I think I have seen a sealed cab before, but I'm not certain.

What I'm thinking is this: Sealed, 1x12 cab with a 1/4" input and an XLR out, internal mounted mic. Then, you can crank the amp with a neglible effect on stage volume.

Ever tried one? Know of a supplier?

Randall makes one as does Demeter. Been out for years. I have the Randall. It works but you have to think outside the box for mics. 57's for example pickup way to much cab resonance. The 609 silver on the speaker edge is decent. I think that the Senn 906 would be even better because its not so bright. In general, you will want a hyper cardoid mic to minimize the amount of cab resonance the mic picks up. I also lined the entire cab with Auralex foam as heavily as possible and plugged the vent. That helped as well

yeah, isolation cabs have been around for a while ... they can sometimes sound a little choked to me for live use, but for recording they seem to give good results ... a real fancy one has the mic mounted on an adjustable 'stand' that allows the position of the mic to be optimized

That mic info is good to know.

What about speaker choices? Are they affected by the isolation cab?

I didn't care for the V30 it shipped with but I don't like V30's period. I have an old Greenback in it right now that is working out pretty well for Marshall tones. I am thinking about picking up an Alnico Blue for it for cleaner sounds.

I use a THD Hotplate at times as well because a single 25w speaker can't handle the full brunt of a 100w plexi. More often though I get better results from turning the amp down and putting a Marshall Guv'nor in front of the amp. I also use an Auralex Gramma to isolate the cab from the floor.
