Seeking information on the Original El Diablo

I am currently on a quest to find a new bridge pickup.

My guitar is a alder/maple superstrat currently with with a jb/jazz set. I have tried the regular screamin demon but felt it was a little to thin/hollow and shrill but had good cleans and articulation. I like the JB but feel like its a touch too hot and one dimensional. I really like its grindy/crunch but feel it lacks some versatility and would like it to be a bit less honky with just slightly less output.

I recently learned of the custom shop "original" El Diablo pickup and it peaked my interest. Correct me if I'm wrong but I hear it is simply an overwound screamin demon that meters out at about 13k. This seems to me to be right in the sweet spot of slightly less than the JB but more than the Demon. I have heard that the slight overwind tamed the harsh highs, filled out the tone a little, all while keeping the great clarity that the demon is known for. I play mostly instrumental shreddy 80s hard rock stuff but also blues, fusion, country and other genres just as much. So I need a pickup that can sound good and handle a fair amount of styles and playing dynamics. I really like my Jazz neck pickup, would this mesh well with it?

I did some reasearch and could only really find this review describing this pickup:

The original "El Diablo" was inspired by and directly based on the Screamin’ Demon. From the outside, you can't tell the two apart. Like the Demon, the Diablo featured a coil with 6 adjustable hex screws mated to a second coil with traditional fillister type pole pieces. Both the Demon and the Diablo housed an A5 (Alnico V) magnet at their core. However, the coils of the Diablo were wound to a much higher resistance than the Demon’s typical 10K range. When I spoke with MJ about the design more than a decade ago, she said the goal of the El Diablo was to increase the output and tame the sometimes harsh top end of the Screamin' Demon without losing its tightness, drive and clarity. This "original” El Diablo was designed at the request of Scott Ian, but is not the model most SD fans associate with him because it was not the pickup found in his signature guitars.

This all sounds good but I would like to learn more. Anyone have any more info/experience with this pickup?? If I do end up wanting to get this, where and how do I order it? I couldn't even find it on the seymour custom shop website. Does it still exist?

Re: Seeking information on the Original El Diablo

Oh yes. You can still order one. I technically have two (one was ordered as the El Diablo, the other as an overwound demon at 13k) and they are killer! Still tight and percussive like a demon and definitely warmer with more midrange heft.

Re: Seeking information on the Original El Diablo

Oh yes....my el diablo measures out 14.83k. So, getting into Custom territory. The other, like I say, is a 13k overwound demon, which might be the better option if you want the overall feel of the demon....just a little more juice and a warmer top.

Re: Seeking information on the Original El Diablo

If you have the screamin demon still at hand, get an A8 magnet and swap it in. This is what i have in my strat right now. The hex screws pointing to the neck. If the high strings are still too sharp, you can change the for filisters.

I tried the A8 demon but felt that while it did help shape the eq a bit it didn't quite add the output punch I was looking for.

I guess I am a little confused. I thought the Original El Diablo was literally an overwound Screamin Demon to the range of about 13k. So your saying you ordered both the El Diablo (14.83k) and a custom "Overwound Screamin Demon" (13k). Is there a difference between these other than just slight resistance values?

Re: Seeking information on the Original El Diablo

No, just adding an A8, while cool, isn't going to do quite what you're after. The change isn't as dramatic as say, an A8 or magnet change in general in a Custom.

Good question. The one wound to around 13k is a little more like the demon in the traditional sense: just a little less bright, more midrange girth and yes....it is a little hotter. I actually wish this was how they made the demon, I think a lot of guys would love it.

The one wound up over 14k deviates more: still tight and punchy, more aggressive in the mids, less open sounding and less top end. That kind of single coil chime you get with a normal demon is just hinted at now. It is also what I would call a bona fide high output job; easily in the range of the jb. So, if you are looking for more of the traditional demon, just a little more juice and less top, the 13k one would be the way to go.

I am going to go look through my million pickup boxes and see what I can dig up here. I am kinda curious myself. Haha

Yeah that would be awesome thank you! Now I am very curious about these two pickups and since they are custom shop there are very few descriptions and resources about them. Any other impressions and information you can lend would be fantastic. Thanks so much!

So, I found the overwound demon box. I originally ordered it with an A8 magnet, but I do have a 5 in there now. Couldn't find the box for the other pickup that actually says "El Diablo" on it though. Same thing though....both are overwound demons.

awesome thanks! So with the demon wound to around 13k what is your preference to A5 vs A8? Was the A8 just too thick and meaty?

Re: Seeking information on the Original El Diablo

Mmm......no. Really, the big difference between the 8 and 5 is a bit more output and midrange overall. MJ threw the A5 in there for me as well; she actually recommended I order it with the A5 but hey....we know everything, right? The A5 version is a little more open, has a bit more of the demon chime and snap in the highs and is a bit tighter. Both are cool though. I think with the one wound up close to 15k it would be overkill though.

Anyway, this is one of my favourite Custom shop humbuckers.....right up with the S-Deco (which also has things in common with a demon). It is as described: a demon with more output (I would say, upper end of moderate), more mids and warmer highs...although it is still a bright pickup.

This all sounds awesome. Ok so if I was to contact the Custom Shop to inquire about ordering this how do I contact them? Would that best be done over the phone? Can they also do variations on magnets? I am thinking about exactly this: Overwound Screamin demon trembucker to about 13.5-14K with 4 conductor cable and rough cast A5 magnet. Hows that sound? :)

Re: Seeking information on the Original El Diablo

Sounds like a killer pickup man! I would PHONE the custom shop directly; it is the best way to get a hold of them. Give the specs you want....but also what kind of guitar it is going and what you ideally want the new pickup to accomplish. You do that and I am betting you will be a happy man; the overwound demon/diablo is a killer pickup! :)

Re: Seeking information on the Original El Diablo

awesome thanks so much for all the info and help with this custom pickup!
