SEGD (Someone Else's Guitar Day)

I've been asked to refinish this Charvel. I'm just curious what it is, exactly.

Set neck, arch top, "noodle" Charvel logo. Licensed Floyd made in Germany by Schaller. "Jackson" logo on the Floyd. All Jackson hardware, including pickups (covered, passive HH, Jackson logo molded into cover.)

No serial number that I can find. Thoughts?

"Paint" is this thick plastic that is peeling off. I'll have to strip it. The wood below is really light yellow with a super tight grain.

The owner suffered a pretty serious head trauma, and is really struggling. I don't have the heart to take his money. He is reimbursing me for paint only, I'm donating my time. But I really want to do a nice job for this guy. Get it all set up and restrung and intonated(never set up a Floyd before...look for a thread begging for help in the future!)

**** eyah i love those charvels. I have two sporting the same toothpaste logo

The model should be easy to nut out on google. Maybe XL or model 5.

Re: SEGD (Someone Else's Guitar Day)

I was thinking 750xl as well. Good luck with the job and great of you to donate your time.

Re: SEGD (Someone Else's Guitar Day)

Damn,that's tasty!
I could probably even get over the toothpaste logo on that one!

What color? & post progress pics!!!
:D

Re: SEGD (Someone Else's Guitar Day)

Looks like one of the millions of lower priced Charvels they cranked out at the end of the 80s. I bet it will be a much cooler guitar when you are finished.

Re: SEGD (Someone Else's Guitar Day)

Looks like a 750xl to me. DEFINITELY not a model series, those never had toothpaste logos.

Serial number not stamped on the last fret?

If it is in fact a 750xl, it is one of the most expensive import models. $1,170 at the time (or $1,400 for the figured tops), its also one of the rarest (made for one production year), so 'one of the million of lower priced Charvel's' is a bit of a stretch here.

Also, the covered Jackson pickups suggest it was built earlier in the run.

Yes, there is!!!
THank you. I found it as I was cleaning the fret board.

I'm guessing I go to the Jackson website to look it up.

Oh, here are some pics of it now that I've taken it apart. The thing was FILTHY! The Floyd has gunk in all the threads. This baby needs some love.
The guy wants the same blue, or slightly darker, with realistic lightning.

BTW, I've hand cut the toothpaste logo in masking tape, but I'm not happy with it. I may try again, but would prefer to buy a decal and clear over it. Anyone know where I could find one? I can find a ton of the Guitar style logo, but no toothpaste. Thanks. (I may have to have one custom cut at a sign shop. But that will cost more, I think)

Re: SEGD (Someone Else's Guitar Day)

So that makes it a 1989. This is RIGHT around the time they changed the trem routing to be flat vs pull up.

The colour is 'Pearl Blue'

As far as decals go, its tough, but if anyone knows its www.fretsonthenet.com shoot them an email.

Re: SEGD (Someone Else's Guitar Day)

Awesome guitar and look forward to seeing the refinish!

And you are the first person I've known to ask for a toothpaste logo decal lol (they are my least favorite logos, love the guitar ones.)

Best of luck on the project and please keep us posted (preferably with pics :D )

Re: SEGD (Someone Else's Guitar Day)

Hi Trey. Can't say I'm fussy for the logo, either, LOL. I prefer the guitar logo, as well.
But the owner wanted it kept, and (unfortunately) its not my guitar. Besides, it was the logo that was the real clue as to what this baby actually is.

Oh, Kamanda...thanks for that info! I managed to find a database of serial numbers here.. http://audiozone.dk/index-filer/charvel-750xl-guitar.htm#charvel_750_xl_serial
The SN on this guitar fits right into that sequence, so yes, it is a 750XL. Good eye, everyone! I've emailed Jackson for a manufacture date. I figure the owner might like some documentation of the guitar's providence. I've also emailed Frets on the Net about the decal. THanks for that tip.

I just can't believe how much dirt and grime are all over this thing. I'll post pics once its stripped. Its supposed to be a mahogany body with a maple arch top, but I've never seen mahogany this light/yellow in color or with such a tight grain. Hmmmm. Paint stripping will tell.

I'm concerned about stripping the neck. I don't want to sand and inadvertently change the shape. But I don't want to use heat or chemical either as the neck has binding and I don't want to melt or damage it. (I'm using heat on the body and probably the headstock, though that is bound, too) I'd like to feather the paint so I'm not sanding right to the binding edge. Thoughts? I've never stripped a bound neck before, and dont want to F--- it up. And this paint/plastic/poly(?) is THICK!

Not a problem! I know my Charvel's...which is also why I'm telling you it's an 1989 ;)

Keep us posted! And yes, I prefer the guitar logo too, but it wouldn't look right on one of these.

Re: SEGD (Someone Else's Guitar Day)

I typed "toothpaste logo Charvel decal" into google
came up with this on top

Thanks for that.
Funny, I was googling charvel toothpaste logo all over the place and that never came up. Not sure if the water transfer can be cleared over...I'll have to check. Jackson customer service got back to me and said I could get one through them, as well.

Now if I could just figure out what I'm doing with that neck....
