Is this mic all that? Is it worth it? Better than a SM57?

I'd say if you only had one mic on the cabinet - go with the 57... but the two mixed sounds really, really ******ned good.

It's also amazing on tom's and fare's well with bass drums, so it's nice to have it in a recording arsenal.

kind of a personal preference - but since I got my 421 I have never used my 57. It is just a much truer more open sounding mic to my ears.

I love the 421 for guitars, I like the 57 as well. I've used them both equally. I don't think there is any comparison on toms though, the 421 owns on toms.

if i had both mics i would use them both... the 57 on the front of the amp and the 421 miking the rear on the cone... on a open back cab (combo)

I always find a 421 on a guitar amp to be great when mixed with a Condensor mic to add a bit of warmth to the tone.

421s are also my 'go to' mics for recording Toms and sometimes bass cabs aswell.

OLD THREAD I KNOW... but I bought one tonite

Any tips and tricks? How do you think it is for vocals or live work?
I saw someone said put the SM57 in front and the 421 in the back.

So far I am finding this mic works best CLOSE up to the cab in the M or bassy setting.

I'd stick the 57 slightly off axes, and the MD421 at about a 45 degree angle to it, making kind of a V with the butt ends up the mic. Also try jsut sticking it in the same place you have the 57, but on another speaker. Mix to taste, but I generally find it sounds best if you have the 421 down 5-6db from the 57.

What does angling it do? Make it more creamy like a 57 off axis?

I think I actually prefer the MD421 to the 57 - though live the 57 seems more durable.

Yeah - smoothens the high end, it's known these days as the 'Fredman' method, although he uses 2x57's.

The top end it creates sounds competely awesome - super smooth, creamy, rich, with a killer midrange, given the right amp and cab, of course.

I use that mic for guitar and it kills. I seem to like the 57 better for recording solos. I have to try the other techniques I saw in this thread as well, they sound cool as I record with both open back and multispeaker cabs.

I've used it for vocals and it sounds good actually, but I like the condensors better for that. Sounds crisper and more true.

Like I said the 421 is my favorite mic for rcording guitar. I just posted a clip itn the tips clips area which was of course recorded with the 421. Mine has a 5 position roll-off filter that I leave in off.
