Sell This Guitar - What I've Been Up To

So, when I am not working for the wonderful folks at Seymour Duncan I tend to do a lot of web development and many months ago decided to build a site where people could easily sell and find guitars, anywhere in the world. After a lot of coffee, and endless tweaking, I am happy to report that the site has gone live:

http://www.sellthisguitar.com

So here is the low-down on the features:

- Worldwide searchability

- Free access to buy or sell instruments

- Image upload and icon selection options

- Rare guitar finds within your own backyard

- Built-in auto-location randomizer to ensure your actual location is secure. While guitar stores will want to use the precise icon feature, Sell This Guitar's auto-location feature will give users the piece of mind that no one will know the real location of their prized guitars. If any scurvy tone pirate wants to try and find your treasured ES-175 while you are away, they will have nothing to play but the blues.

- Sell This Guitar offers a great outlet for selling that guitar that you no longer use, and finding the guitar of your dreams. Use the search feature to discover instruments both within your community and within the walls of your local guitar stores.

So feel free to add any guitars you have sitting around and want to sale. If you have any ideas for the guitar of the month for March, let me know!

Sell This Guitar - What I've Been Up To

I was just thinking about something like this the other day. No joke. You beat me to it. LOL

Great concept, Scott. I'll see if I can get some people in New Zealand to put some blips on that map! :)

Re: Sell This Guitar - What I've Been Up To

Cool site and a great idea!

Some preliminary feedback:
+ The search function doesn't seem to be working - all guitars are displayed after a search by brand.
+ Need more guitar icons - clicked an Explorer icon on the map and it pulled up a Firebird. As the map fills up, it will be more important for the icons to be more exact.
+ Guitar of the Month - where is this? I click the GoM and nothing happens. Somehow I figured that would bring me to who is selling it?
+ The pop-up information box (when I click a guitar icon for details) doesn't always show up fully in view. Confusing, because I had to scroll the map to read the description. Would be better if the info pop-ups arranged themselves to be fully in view.

These are minor points, in no way meant to detract from the main point that this is a cool idea, and a nice piece of work. I hope this feedback is useful to you.

Feedback is always welcome. I'm not able to produce the search problems you are having though, if you can send me a screenshot and browser info I'll try and get to the bottom of it. Endless icons is not possible though, we just try and get as close to the type as possible. In the future, it's possible we may have an expanded section where you can choose from 20 or so more icons. In fact, it's a likely possibility.

For Guitar of The Month, that is actually the way it *will* work but since of course we've just launched like two days ago, we didn't have any guitars to be the guitar of the month so I just picked one in general. But in a week or so you will likely see it functioning as you mentioned.

Thanks for the comments, feedback is helpful because ultimately I want it to be able to serve as a global marketplace for all guitar buying and selling and to do so I need to understand those needs better. Some features I'm considering:

1) Mobile App
2) Ability to search by bass/acoustic/7-string/etc since right now it just searches brand/model/year. It searches based on your auto-location or where you drop an icon.
3) I'm mulling over adding a store system, where you can drop a store icon and upload multiple entries inside the store. The additional amount of work this is makes it unlikely I would start that unless there were like 1000 guitars already posted.

As for the icons, what types would you like to see? We've got LP, Strat, Tele, SG, Explorer, Acoustic (Dreadnaught) and a standard bass.

Re: Sell This Guitar - What I've Been Up To

GREAT Idea! A few things...

IE9/WIN7 Problem - Upload picture link doesn't work (not clickable) for me when making a listing. I have the current versions of Flash/Java and I'm not running any browser add-ons.

Question - How can a user remove a posting once an item is sold? Is there a way to edit a posting (price, pictures, etc.)? Will postings "expire" so the interface doesn't crowd with outdated info?

A Thought About Icons - I was thinking of a couple icons to add, but I had an idea...what if you only had one icon for an electric, one for an acoustic and one for a bass? That would keep the interface clean and simple. While offering multiple icons for all the popular models is a nice gesture, there's simply no advantage and I feel the "clutter" of all the icons may actually hinder searching! Right now, buyers seeing a Les Paul icon might pass up on a listing because they assume it's for a Les Paul when it's really for a Gretsch, etc. Just some food for thought...

What do you plan to do with regard to security. I mean CL etc is now a haven for Gibson counterfeits, either a Fake model or an ad where there no guitar actually for sale.

Re: Sell This Guitar - What I've Been Up To

this sounds great!! (cant pull up from here at work..) will this be fee based? if so, hopefully it'll undercut FEEbay.. Holy smokes they (and thier sister rapepal) made a pile off me on the last 8 guitars I just sold off...

Hi, IE is kind of a pain as it relates to the interface, we do support IE 9 though and I should be able to get that fixed for you in the next couple days.

When you register an item, you get an email that has a link that you can use to delete that item once you have sold it, or have decided to remove it. It's possible (perhaps likely) in the future we will have a link where you can edit your entry. At the moment, trying to avoid people having to create accounts.

An interesting idea, I will ponder this more. Originally all the icons were just an LP. What does everyone else feel about just having a standard icon like an LP or Strat for ALL electric. And should it be an LP or a Strat?

I'm just a gateway to connect people and make the process easier. I neither charge anything to use the site, buying or listing, so I play no role in verifying authenticity and what not. I can only recommend people be smart and if it's a high-dollar item like a rare Les Paul and it's not from an established store, consider an appraisal or escrow service. Perhaps those are somehow a service I could consider down the road but for now it's the same as anything else, be smart.

Use the lp, just to piss off Gibson.:)

Re: Sell This Guitar - What I've Been Up To

We just released several new features, including a search engine interface. Here is what you do:

1) Either use the auto-location which automatically will detect your location OR drop an icon around the area you want to search.
2) Set the search distance (by default worldwide)
3) Hit enter to bring up the new interface

You can also browse all the listings now too by clicking the icon left of the search bar. Some really cool stuff coming in about two weeks.

Re: Sell This Guitar - What I've Been Up To

Hey guys, just wanted to pass along the big upgrade. Just added the ability to add stores to Sell This Guitar. You'll be able to upload a picture of your store, contact and address and list all guitar/bass/acoustics you have for sale. Those will be searchable and browsable to local people. What I am trying to accomplish is a way to search all brands, makes, models in all the stores you are willing to drive to. The stores are completely editable, you can login and remove and add instruments.

Here's some screenshots:

New store icon, just click and drop it where you are located:

Here's what you see when you start a store, you will then fill out the details and can upload as many guitars as you would like. You may return later to add more or remove some.

And now you can search the inventory of local stores or click on them and browse through their selection before putting on your pants and actually going down there.

If you have any feedback or notice any bugs, let me know! It's a new feature but it's been pretty well tested.
