Semi-Hollow 335 pickup choice and wiring? advice

Hi all

Finally i have collected some dosh for customising my Epiphone Sheraton II (90's era)

Humbucker Pups perhaps - NECK --> APH-1 (alnico II pro)
BRIDGE --> SH-PG (pearly gates) OR SH-3 Stagmag?

Is this a good combo for a semi-hollow? I realise that this is an issue of taste. I'm looking for versatile bluesy, rock, jazzy and clean sounds. With some occasional visits to the heavy distortions...
And dont want to stray too far from the natural 335 like character though.

Because it's such a big, and complex job, I'm having it done by a tech at a shop.
Thinking of having all the wiring and electronics upgraded while he's in there anyway.

Should i go silly and have it Jimmy Page wired, as those pups are all 4 wire. Or is JP wiring only good for Les Pauls?

Tell my i'm being foolish, and should just drop in a set of Seth Lovers and be done...

Thanks

If you want to stay with Classic Rock, Blues, Jazz and clean sounds most of the time, you may want to start up simple, like a Jazz neck, JB bridge or just like what you said. a set of Seth Lovers to see how they sound. Those combinations stand up to trials time after time.

I'd keep it simple and consider a set of Seth Lovers....or maybe a Seth neck and Custom Custom bridge if you want a hotter bridge pickup. That's what I did. Couldn't be happier with the Seth/Custom Custom combo.

how do u wire a sheraton? theres no back plate! lol i just sniped the pickup wires and soldered the new pup wires to the old ones! lol i was thinkin about gettin either seths or seth/cc combo, let me know what you do and tell me what it sounds like :D

Re: Semi-Hollow 335 pickup choice and wiring? advice

That's the easiest way. But the correct way is to pull all of the controls out through the pickup hole, unsolder the old pickups, solder the new pickups in and pull all the controls and switch and jack back into place by attaching string to the controls, jack and switch before you pull them out in the first place. The Seth's cover pretty much any style in my Sheraton, though I would love to try a Pearly Gates set in it for a bit more growl.

I have read a fantastic review about the custom shop larry carlton. The reviewer said he never liked the Gibson 57 and 57+ in his LP, but now he saw they are the perfect mate for a semic-acustic. Maybe this also a way to go.

Thanks guys. I sniffed around the Harmony-Central forum, and goodness me, that's one rotten nasty place... Here is a much nicer vibe...

Will post results

Re: Semi-Hollow 335 pickup choice and wiring? advice

I have a Sheraton II and have a set of '59's in it, and I love them. I almost went with the Seths, but chose the 4 conductor '59's for the splits. I learned a cool mod from Stew-Mac where you wire the tone pots to split the HB's. There are two ways to do it. One, if you don't use the tone pots, you can dial how much coil cut you want. Or, the other is a tone pot from 1-9, and 10 is the coil cut. When I cut both pups and use the middle toggle position, I get a Thinline Tele (the f-hole one) tone. And yes, they are a pain to rewire.

I have a 333 and have been considering replacing the awful stock pups with some TV Jones TV'Trons to get more of a Gretsch sound.

I'll second that. It's what I have in my 355 -- though I put an Alnico 5 in the Seth and an Alnico 3 in the CC.

But then again keep in mind that this 355 is unusually bright, like a Tele; if your Sheraton has a lot of natural woof as most semi-hollows do, you might want a brighter set of pickups -- maybe some 59's will do the trick in that case.
