Ephphone make good quality instuments at good prices, as they are basically a korean version of Gibson. Epiphone make:

"dot" - a clone of the 335 but at much better prices. This is the cheapest Epi semi - it has humbuckers and a solid centre block like the Gibson 335.
"casino' - PROPER hollowbody. usually comes with p90's as well, so much more of a Joh Lennon instrument, not heavy rock n roll!
'Sheraton" - same as dot, but more ornate and expensive.
'Riviera' - similar to dot, has minihumbuckers and a frequensator (sp?) tailpiece. Noel Gallagher of Oasis got a custom-made one of these in the 90's in Union Jack colours :32:

I really love the sound of semis - they are a perfect cross between the meat of a solidbody and the resonance and tone of an acoustic. Epis are great guitars for the money, but the pups can be disappointing; for a textbook tone, get Gibson 57 classics (as used in the Big Boys' 335), but I've heard these can be a bit too dull and creamy for some ppl; Dimarzios (or, of course, seymour duncans!) can give you more options. Generally, though, you want to go to the lower end of the output spectrum; u dont see many shredders with 335s, although I believe tom in blink 182 has one with an invader in it....

I'm with Scott and Chip!!!

Heritage is the way to go and used you can pick them up for around a grand and they use great wood as well. I'm jonesing for one soooo bad right now. I want to load it up with....nevermind. Anyways the Heritage quality is great it's old school Gibson...How could you go wrong?

I also am a Godin fan I have an 24 fret LG with the SD P90s. Very nice...anyways back on topic, I have heard the Flat five is a great sounding semi.

Overlooked. Under-priced. Excellent guitars.
The ones with the P-90's sound a bit better/hotter than the mini-humbucker equipped models, so keep that in mind. You can usually snag one of these for under or right at $300, but they're worth well more than that tiny price tag.

CHeck out the Heritage 535 or the one Hamer makes. They're both excellent quality and probably a little cheaper.

If you want a quality semi-hollowbody, I suggest the Dean Chafin Del Sol. It's slightly smaller than a regular 335, but still gives all the tone characteristics of one without some of the problems often associated (aka feedback problems).

I know it's a shameless self plug, but I will have mine up for sale shortly (need to fund a couple of new pedals and I'm more of a super strat fan). I've owned it for a few years and I love it, but due to other stuff, it has to go. Look for it on the selling portion of the forum.

I was looking to experiment with semi-hollows, they seem like they have a much different range of sounds than what i work with now.
Im on a budget. I like the look is Gibson 355s and the like, but those are not cheap.
Any suggestions? I'd like to keep price down if possible

You get what you pay for.
IF you are on a budget I would consoder the EPI Lucille. This is a 345 Stereo Without the "F" holes. The problem with Semi hollws are at high volume and high gain you can experience feed back due to the air in the chambers causing the wood to vibrate. Do not think of this as a negative. I own a 335 and play it reghluarly thru a Marshall 900 at a good amount of volume. It works fine. The Lucille without the "F" holes will be easier to manage.
Another good choice is the Ibanez Artist (I Think). This is the guitar that John Scolfield used for years. It is essentially a 335. The EPI Sheareton is also a good guitar.

well since the thread is back, I DID end up getting a semi-hollow, some brand that was part of Washburn think made this guitar.
Funny cuz I think I sold that guitar like nine years ago! It got a custom custom and it was cool but I think I started a long affair with strats shortly after that!

Maybe try a semi-hollow from Richard Saylor?

I'm reworking the pickups in my Semi-Hollow Strat I got from him.
