Serious question -can an EQ pedal do it all?

Re: Serious question -can an EQ pedal do it all?

If EQ pedals could do what changing pickups do, Line 6's could do what Marshall JMP's do.

That's not a fair comparison at all. In fact, Line 6 could make amps that completely emulate the vacuum tubes, transformers, etc. of the very best JMP. It is completely possible. However, they don't have clear models of all the components, or have the engineering ability to be faithful to the real thing, so they fudge it to make the models sound somewhat reminiscent of the real deal. In electronics, if there is an electric signal going in and an electric signal going out, there is some mathematical function that describes what happens in between them. So it's 100% possible in theory to emulate a JMP.

I personally think tone is relative. What I mean by that is if an eq pedal or a parametric unit "does it" for you, than by all means use it. I agree that an eq can breathe new life into a rig. For example, I own a Peavey JSX. I like the tone of the amp but when I throw my parametric eq in the loop and start messing around with frequencies, the gain of said freqs and the bandwidth, that makes me absolutely love the amp. I can get pretty much any tone I want out of it. And yes you can, to a certain extent, emulate a pickup change with an eq. Probably more so with a parametric than a plain graphic. Sorry for the rant, all I want to say is if you like the way your tone sounds, then play and love it and don't worry about what other people think of it. If it sounds good to you then it is "right".:headbang:
