lew, i bought three surfers no rw/rp or anything and put the lowest one in the middle, hottest one in the bridge and the in between in the neck. the baseplate was something that i added myself. it really helped fatten up the bottom end.

i use the surfer custom now and when i get around to it im gonna put a base plate on that one too

There ya go. I did the same thing to my '63 Strat. I've had that guitar forever and it looks bone stock but years ago I removed the three original pickups, measured them and then put the strongest one in the bridge position and the weakest one in the neck position. Didn't make alot of difference because all three are still under 6.4K...but it helped a little. :) There's more variation among the Surfers and if a dealer wants to take the time it's possible to put together a set like yours if he has a few Surfers he can go through and check the DC resistance. I like the baseplate too, BTW. Seems to bring up the bass and maybe the mids about 3-5%. Thanks for the explanation! Lew
