Seth Lover neck and '59 bridge on a 335 copy

Hi

I have a 335 copy and I'm about to change pickups. Has anyone tried a combination of Seth Lover neck and '59 bridge (NC)?

For neck pickup I'm after a warm and smooth vintage sound with lots of sustain. For bridge position I'm after a pickup that also has a vintage sound and lots of sustain, but with more punch. So that the neck pickup could do all the blues and jazz kind of stuff and a bridge pickup could handle the rock stuff.

So I have narrowed my options to three combinations:

1. Seth Lover neck, '59 bridge (NC)
2. both '59
3. both Seth Lover

Any suggestions? Is it a problem if one pu is Alnico 2 and the other is Alnico 5? And what about wax potting, is it a problem if one pu ('59) is wax potted and the other (Seth) is not?

Regards,

I have an Antiquity neck, Seth bridge. I really diggin' it. Oh yeh, in a Ibanez 335 clone.

welcome

I have a Hamer Artist, which has the stock Seth set. Sounds fine to me.

FWIW, Hamer uses '59s in their Studio, which is a solid body.

you can mix and match, of course, but you'll find several folks here who will probably recommend the Seths, which are a smooth, warm set

Thank you all. I probably can't go wrong with a set of seths, but somehow the sample clips of '59 bridge sounded a bit better to me. But then again the clips have been played with a les paul. Maybe I'll just trust you guys on this one.

By the way, is the feedback going to be a problem with seths? Mostly I play through a 100W Marshall Super PA in a medium size room. And that amp can be loud.

Re: Seth Lover neck and '59 bridge on a 335 copy

I use the a5 59 bridge and a a2 Pearly Gates neck in one of my guitars and the 59 bridge all by its lonesome in another. It's one of my favorite pickups. A5 seems to have a little more bass and a little tighter bass response than a2 and I think thats a PLUS in a bridge pickup and kind of a minus in a neck pickup.

So I think an a2 neck and a5 bridge is kind of logical.

I don't think there'd be any problem at all with your proposed Seth N & 59B combo and I suspect it'll sound great.

Thanks Lew. I finally got my pickups changed. I ended up buying a pair of antiquitys. They were second hand and I got them for a decent price, that's way. Otherwise I would have bought Seth Lovers.

I can't tell you how happy I am. I expected the antiquitys to be way better than my previous pickups, but they seem to be even more. Just perfect for me. It's just unbelievable how they can be so smooth and yet so clear at the same time. They can be sweet and jazzy, but they sure can rock too. But you guys knew that already. :)

So thank you all, without you and this forum I probably would have bought '57 classics. They might not be bad pickups, but I know it now that they were not meant for me and my needs.

I like real tight bass on old Marshalls, so I'd either go C-5/59 or CC/Seth
I like the CC in place of the Seth Bridge, only because it's got a bit more output and it's potted. The unpotted Seth Neck has never been a problem, even under high gain.
