seth lover vs. a2p

hi, what do you guys think is a better pickup for a les paul classic. the seth lover set, or the a2p. i was thinking the seth in the bridge and a2p in the neck, but the cover on the seth would look awkward on a noncovered a2p. i play led zeppelin, pearl jam, guns n roses, velvet revolver, aerosmith, etc. with the les paul. some people told me the antiquitys were awesome but the same as the seth just more expensive and aged(i think theyre a little better though), and that the 59's were perfect. i play a marshall tsl100. i dont think burstbuckers would sound very old school so no. what do you think would be the best choice? im leaning towards a2p or seth lover. thanx

Get the SETH set, but only if you don't play at High Volume/High Gain... sometimes they will whistle due to being un-potted...
Better yet... the Pearly Gates are also Fantastic!

Re: seth lover vs. a2p

I will know soon. I love the Seth Lover in my Les Paul bridge, with an uncovered 59 in the neck position. The SL is my favorite pickup in a Les Paul bridge. I am a classic rock kinda guy too. I have had lots of pickups in that guitar :D
I have an a2pro on order and it shipped today. I will have a review and some clips soon.

Re: seth lover vs. a2p

just get a covered A2P - you are looking at one in my avatar. You can get em from just about anyone. I love the A2P in my LP! It's so smooth and warm, but still very vintage.

When we asked Seymour what pickup to put in our Les Pauls to get the classic tones Eric Clapton got with Cream, he said Seth Lovers or Antiquitys. So I'd say: go for Seth Lovers...or Antiquitys! Lew

Based on Seymour's suggestion, I just put a Seth in the bridge of my '61 LP/SG and it sounds great. I've had Antiqs in my Les Paul for years and wouldn't change them for anything. Either way, you cant' go wrong.

Re: seth lover vs. a2p

In a LP, from the pickups I've tried in mine, these are my faveorites:

1. Pearly Gates Set
2. Seth Lover Set
3. 59n (with an Alnico II mag)/Custom bridge
4. 59n/JB bridge

out of these, the Pearly Gates set can do the most for me, but if you want something hotter in the bridge, the PGn/Custom combo might work for you.

The PG at the neck will cover all of the styles you mentioned. The Custom might be a bit to aggressive for the Zep stuff, but it will romp on everything else. :burnout:

Re: seth lover vs. a2p

In my heritage 150 (LP) I have a jazz neck with an A2P bridge. It really sounds great. The alnico 5 magnet in the neck keeps everything clean and articulate while the alnico 2 mag in the bridge crunches but also tames the ice-picky highs that happen high on the fingerboard. I love A2 Mags.

I LOVE THE PG SET!!!

At the risk of being accused of hijacking, I am in a similar predicament. I am thinking about putting a set of Seths in my Gibson ES-137 Classic semi-hollow, but I'm not sure whether I should put the same thing or something different in my Les Paul Studio (needs gold covers). Would the Seths sound sufficiently unique in each guitar, or should I spread out to something different in one of them?

So far, the Seths have sounded great in every guitar I've heard them in. I'd try them in the ES-137 and see what you think. If you love 'em, then try them in your Les Paul too. The two guitars will sound very differant from each other. The Seth neck in my semi hollowbody Monoco sounds very diferant from the Seth neck I put in my solid body Hamer Sunburst even though they're the same pickup...just because the two guitars sound so differant from each other.

Back in the days when all there were was one Gibson humbucker that Gibson used in every guitar, those guitars still managed to sound differant from each other.

An L-5 doesn't sound like an SG....etc.

I always start with my favorite pickup in any new guitar I'm working on...then change it if I'm not satisfied.
