i'd say try an a2/a8 combo in there first, the a2 will keep some of the treble at bay but still tighten up and get an output boost from the a8.

on the subject of magnets, today i was discussing different types with a local luthier/tech friend who recommended the unpolished, individually rough cast variety as opposed to polished magnets cut from the same large piece. any opinions on the difference between the 2 types and what do SD tend to use?

One of our most respected PU winders here, Zhang, says he prefers rough cast magnets in the bridge slot. Maybe a slightly more complex tone from the magnetic field not being quite as uniform?

there's actually a ton of different varieties of magnets out there as it is, what with different castings, guass levels, alnicos, and ceramics. personally i like to keep it simple with the 6 alnicos offered by wymoreguitars, otherwise i'd never get around to playing because i'd be tinkering waaaay more.

well i,ve ordered up a selection of rough cast magnets from the states so when they cross the pond i,ll be back looking for more suggestions and advice!

I have a cat for the neck of my Tony Iommi guitar. I intend on changing the mags to the Alnico 8/4 combo. I have seen Tonys original SG and he has a P-94 type pup in the neck. While I love the Tony Iommi bridge humbucker, I think I can get that genuine Sabbath sound with the modded cat in the neck...I shall let you know how it sounds. You may be able to hear it when I plug it in...

The A8/A4 mag pair is only for a bridge P-90. For the neck a pair of A5's or an A5/A4 usually work best. P-94's have twin A5's.
