Seths or Ants for New Les Paul

I just bought a new gibson les paul and need some help choosing between the two. These are the only two sets of duncans left im interested in trying and I have most of the other duncans here in my collection of pickups. I will be using this axe mainly for blues/blues rock and some old school hard rock tones as well. I will also be starting a recording project and this will be my go to axe. Im looking for that thick sweet rude old school les paul tone we all know and love. What are some of your experiances with these pickups and what do you guys suggest for this guitar.

I'd go the Seths.......the only reason is that the aged look covers will be out of place on a new guitar with all shiny hardware. Both pickup sets are awesome

Aside from looks what about tonal differences ? I can deal with the aged covers if the ants sound better.

I have both and like Seth's better. I have Seth's in several guitars and haven't needed to change a magnet in one of them (unusual for me). Great as is. I ended up putting an UOA5 in my bridge Ant, as the high end was so rounded, even with 500K's, I couldn't get any bite or cut. With the treble up on the amp, there was plenty of treble dialed in, but it was in the background. That's because of the aged A2, which has less treble and less output (and A2's don't have an abundance of either to begin with).

Like you, I play blues and classic rock; Seth's are the old school sound.

I agree that the Seths are great straight away...Guess thats one reason I haven't spent the cash on the Ants...

My Ant's came in a Agile LP I bought; I wouldn't have bought them at full-price. They're nice, but one pair's enough. I really like Seth's, and have them in a few guitars. I think they're as good as it gets with PAF's. Some other makes may be as good, but I doubt any are better.

I like both I think the Ant's are a little mellower sounding (they can be great for a nice warm, creamy tone) the Seth's are probably a little more versatile overall.

The new JB/Jazz antiquity set looks pretty awesome and I reckon it would pair well with a les paul (of course it all depends)

I've never used the Ants, but from alot of reading, people say they have complex harmonics, they are open sounding, warm, sweet, and great overall...I can say this about the Seths also.

The Antiquities are sprinkled with some Seymour magic dust...I do use the Atiquity Surfers in my strat and have similar results to the PAFs..

Being the most impatient person in the world i went ahead and ordered a set of ant's and a seth bridge pup. After hearing some of your feedback im now wishing i would have ordered a set of seths and a ant bridge. Anyways thanks fellas! I figure if i dont like the ants enough they will sound good in somthing and ill still have the seth bridge to start out with. Who knows maybe the ants will be worth some money one day in the distant future being hand wound by seymour himself so ill hold on to em anyway.

I have experience with both, but more with the Antiquities. I think you went the right way by doing what you did. The Antiquity neck humbucker never fails to amaze me. It's the neck pickup tone I've been hearing in my head for years then once I tried one, it went into all of my guitars. Does everything so well with a nice smoky tone to it.

The Antiquity bridge humbucker is great too, although I generally prefer something slightly hotter. You'll probably be really happy with what you got. My advice is to try the Ant set first. Then, if you want a little more "strength" from the bridge, the Seth will fit the bill perfectly. Good luck and enjoy!

Re: Seths or Ants for New Les Paul

dude the ants are fantastic p'ups really you can't go wrong either way

and +1 to gunny's advice, if you realize the bridge ain't cuttin it, throw the seth in

Re: Seths or Ants for New Les Paul

Ants must vary a lot in strength then....my Ant bridge is 8.75k, which if typically wound would be plenty spicy enough for rock etc. The seth would be better if the guitar was too bright perhaps.

Re: Seths or Ants for New Les Paul

"rude" tone = Pearly Gates

Pg's are one of my top favorite pup sets. I have em in three of my guitars allready so I wanted to try somthing else. They shipped overnight and should be here by this evening so ill post my reviews once i get em and put em in.

Thanks! The ant bridge is the one thing im worried about since i play mostly lead guitar it may not have enough balls . I deff want that ultra authentic paf tone but when its time to dig in for a solo i dont want it all polite sounding.

Re: Seths or Ants for New Les Paul

Ok I just got the new pups! The ants measure 7.56h for the neck and 8.56k for the bridge. The seth comes in lower at 8.15k Maybe the ant bridge will work after all!
