That'd be a lot of typing. :smack: Just buy Dan Erlewine's book of Complete Guitar Repair. It's all in there. :)

Re: setup the guitar...

A setup is akin to a tuneup, oil change, and tire balance/rotation on a car, if that makes sense.

Essentially, it's adjusting the trussrod, setting the string height, adjusting the intonation, and maybe adjusting the pickup heights. You can learn to do them by experimenting, EXCEPT the truss rod.

Seriously, don't just start goofing with that one. You can do serious damage, so have a pro do it, and watch how it's done.

There's plenty of free online instruction, tons of it on this very site. Use the search function, and you'll get a handle on much of it :)

Re: setup the guitar...

Alright ill let the pro handle the truss rod and stuff...

but hey does setting it up have anything to do with the tuners? Like kepping the guitar in tune? What do i do for that?

Re: setup the guitar...

Change your strings more often, and do all the things I mentioned before.

None of it's hard, just get somebody to show you how to do it.

Re: setup the guitar...

tuning problems can be the tuners, but it could also be the intonation, which is part of a setup

Also nut grooving if changing string gauge or if it's just crappy to begin with.

Re: setup the guitar...

Okay well my guitar when it goes out of tune it isnt like one string it all stays the its just like half a step lower.

I mean what the hell?

Re: setup the guitar...

huges +1's to Lew's recomendation of Dan Erlewine's book (i don't have it, but a person at my church does, its a great book!) and JB's suggestion of searching this forum. I'm sure theres more than enough info here, search this (Guitar Shop) forum for "set-up". The Vault also has some good set-up info and tips.

Does you guitar have a floating trem? If so, it's probably because when one string going out of tune, the floatingness(for lack of a better term, :smack: ) causes the rest of the strings to go out of tune with it.

And if you don't have a floating trem...i've got no idea.

Or in proper string installation. Buy Dan Erlwines book as Lew Suggested. It will guide you thru all you would need to know about setting up a guitar. Even the Truss rod.

Re: setup the guitar...

The way you string up a guitar also affects tuning. Make sure your tuners have no loose parts on it. Just make sure everything is tight on all the parts, but make sure not to overtighten.

Re: setup the guitar...

people are too scared of the truss rod. just turn in very small increments and nothing will go wrong (make sure youre turning the right way too). i suppose all the warnings are for dumb kids, but if youre not a total idiot you shouldnt run into any trouble

Agreed. Never more than a quarter turn at a time though and always retune between adjustments.
