Standard scale 7's sound like ass - way too flabby and loose. Baritone is where it's at.
Loserchief said:+1 schecter 7s own so much compared to regular scale 7s.
Skarekrough said:ESP also does the Stephen Carpenter 7 string in a bari scale.
They sound great in standard tuning, but anything lower and the do get kinda flabby. Thicker strings and not mahogany solves that thoughJeff Dunne said:Egg-sack-ly.

ESP uses better wood than Schecter does, or at least fewer pieces for its bodies.Loserchief said:i know and that guitar in natural gloss finish is so sexy. But compared to the schecters it's about the same build quality but is at least 30% more expensive.

MikeRocker said:I vote for 6 string baritone. There's no need to re-learn chord fingerings like you need to do for a 7 string, you just need to be able to transpose pretty well. I guess that doesn't matter if it's only for power chords, but for standard open or barre chords it'll be a lot easier. Also, 6 string pickups are much more readily available.
I think most people really don't understand that a 7 is just a 6 with a low B. They can read it, see it, and hear it, but this idea of having to "relearn" stuff just doesn't make any sense. It's been quite awhile since I first picked one up, but I don't remember any disorientation or anythingJeff Dunne said:Erm... advice from a man who obviously hasn't played a 7. There's no re-learning chord fingerings at all, only adding in extra notes you didn't have previously available.
That, and there are PLENTY of 7 string pickups available.
Jeff Dunne said:My next 7 will actually be the SC607B in natural... while it is a bit more expensive than the Schecters, you must compare it to the HellRaiser in price, which only makes it roughly 200 more, and you get some cool **** over the HR for that 200 - different pickup config, blank fingerboard, neck thru, better wood.
