Seven string or baritone?

Re: Seven string or baritone?

Well, I can't say I feel limited by six strings; heck, I could do just fine with the bottom four! :D I'm just looking to get lower than the drop-c I play in now.

Re: Seven string or baritone?

you could just take off the seventh string and play your seven string guitar as a six string (as a backup for another six string guitar)...I am not sure how that effects the neck, but it probably does not make that much difference - maybe just adjust the truss rod if you leave it that way for a bit...

So you see, they are versatile :)

Re: Seven string or baritone?

Does anyone ever put a high A on a 7 string instead of a low B? You know, in case you have lots of dogs in the audience?

I think the guy in Limp Bizkit did that, it's hard to find good strings that take it that high, though.

He tuned his C# F# B E G# C# C# (the highest string was doubled, to facilitate playing notes that were right next to each other).

George Lynch tried to go higher with it, but they kept breaking strings. He said they tuned it down a whole step, but that was still too much tension, and tuning down further started defeating the point of an extra high string.

all that for a few more high notes...I think C# is really high, but in perspective only a few notes higher, and you still have to get to the little frets at the end of the guitar to use it (Limp Bizkit? they don't play that much of the high note specialty stuff) ...I wonder how that sounds doubling the highest string - I am not understanding what the benefit is - what if one string has more tension than the other - then it would sound chorusy or out of tune?

I think a few people do or have done over at www.sevenstring.org

I know some people with 8 and 9 strings have the extra high A :)

Re: Seven string or baritone?

There are plenty of people who put a high A on.

Rusty Cooley did this for a bit, but also wanted the low B on - thus his 8 string guitar.

That said, I feel extremely limited by a 6 string, even if it's tuned down to B. I've always viewed the fretboard more in terms of patterns than scales, though, so the 7 gives me more to work with, which I find great.
