Severe Reverend and Jerry Jones GAS

So a local retailer has started to stock more unusual brands: Eastwood, Reverend, DiPinto and Jerry Jones. Now I've been curious about Reverends, so I popped by to check 'em out.

Top of the pile were a p90 loaded club king model:

and a Gretsch-style pickup loaded Flatroc:

-The Flatroc I tried had a Lestrem wang bar fitted.

I was deeply taken by the lestrem. Sort of a very slightly wilder bigsby feel.

All the guitars had very nice 60s fenderish necks, and all of them sounded remarkably good and consistent unplugged. For me, the p90 and f'tron pickups were cooler than the humbuckers, which weren't bad at all but not quite to my taste. The least inspiring sounding of the bunch was the solidbody warhawk, though I'm sure the p90 variant would be very cool. Build quality was really solid, about equivalent to Fender Japan in fit and feel.

I think I'll order an orange flatroc with les trem:

I also tried a Jerry Jones Neptune, in blood red with two pickups. Same shape as this guy, sort of dano meets Jetsons:

-I was blown away at how cool this guitar was. I have a new Dano reissue on layby right now, and I've got to say that the Jerry Jones was a much nicer guitar. Four times the price, though. Still, they appear to run for much less secondhand, so I'll keep my eyes out for one. I'd thoroughly recommend one to anyone who wanted a giggable, great sounding Dano-style ax.

I have been looking into either a Dano or a JJ lately...the JJ's are really great guitars!

I'd be all over that JJ if it wasn't so expensive. I'll be watching fleabay like a hawk.

They also had a very nice JJ Jimmy page-style with three pickups and a five-way.

Re: Severe Reverend and Jerry Jones GAS

Can't say much about the JJ, but I have a Reverend Stage King Warhawk 290 and it's absolutely wonderful. I highly recommend Reverend guitars. I was debating between the Warhawk290 and the Flatroc in that same color. You picked some good ones!

Cool! -I'm sure the warhawk 290 would be right down my LP Special obsessed alley. What won it for you when comparing to the flatroc? -and how's that orange in real life?

-here's a fave of mine. I don't think you can get this exact finish, though. Joe Naylor with lestrem fitted Warhawk:

That's the exact guitar I have, in that finish, with a Lestrem. I wish I could play a Flatroc in real life, but the nearest dealer is over two hours away. I wanted a P90 guitar, and I have never tried Revtrons (Like Filtrons, I guess). But they have a really nice return policy. Two weeks, no questions asked. You should definitly order one and if it's not for you, send it back for the other!

Cool. That Warhawk burst is striking.

Re: Severe Reverend and Jerry Jones GAS

The guitars look much better in person than on the website. Even that photo with Joe looks better than the photoshop'd version they have. The Flatroc looks great there, I'm sure it looks killer in person.

Re: Severe Reverend and Jerry Jones GAS

Can you guys describe how the LesTrem feels/sounds a bit more?

um, the bar was set guite flat, and didn't have much width of movement, though you can adjust it for angle and length, which would help on both fronts. It had the subtle feel of a bigsby, but was much less effort to use. Slightly more bounce and travel. I found I cound do certain Jeff Beck-like flutters and dips that you can't normally do with a bigsby, but you can also get that bigsby shimmer as well. I was very impressed.

Re: Severe Reverend and Jerry Jones GAS

Thanks. Other than a Jerry Jones baritone, I have been lusting after a Reverend but was holding out for one of the older ones with a Bigsby. If these are in the same school, I might go for one. Thanks!

Re: Severe Reverend and Jerry Jones GAS

What I like about it is the bigsby feel but with a much lighter, more handle-able bar.

Re: Severe Reverend and Jerry Jones GAS

Thanks! Now you got ME jonesing on these things! :smack:

That one Joe Naylor is holding is SWEET! I've never tried that trem. As long as the guitar is tweaked to stay in tune, I'm sure it'd be fine.

Re: Severe Reverend and Jerry Jones GAS

All Reverends come with Wilkinson E-Z Lock tuners. I've never had a problem with tuning stability and the Les Trem. I do agree that it's very Bigsbylike, but easier for me to use. Plus it's a little less invaisive for those who don't like the look of a Bigsby.
