Seymour Duncan Equivalent to Texas Specials

I'm a big fan of the Texas Special pickups and am curious as to what single coil in the Duncan line would be the equivalent or be comparable to them. I'm guessing either the SSL-1, APS-1 or SSL-5 (tapped), but I haven't played either of those so I don't know, just guessing.

Hey Erik,

If you got the bucks, the Antiquity Texas Hots for the neck & mid and the Custom bridge are awesome. I have them in Jeff Beck Strat and they kick ass!
I notice a little more clarity and chime of a true Strat pup, but with a little extra sizzle. I have the Texas Specials in a MIJ '61 RI and I like them alot but the Ant. Hots are my favorite Strat pups. I also have the SSL-1's in an American Strat and they're also excellent pups, perhaps a bit brighter than the Texas Specials. I should tell you though, that the bridge pup in all three of the guitars I mentioned are hotter pups( to do away with the weak bridge syndrome). The Ant. Custom in the Beck, A Hot Rails in the '61 RI & a Fralin SP43 in the American. Hope this helped somewhat. If you have any specific questions, I'll gladly try to answer them. Good luck.

I was thinking about the weak bridge syndrome but with the Texas Special set I don't find the bridge to be weak at all (somewhere between 6.5k-7.1k) even though it is a bit hotter than the neck and mid (6.2k and 6.5k respectively). That's the kind of balance I'm lookin for and am thinking that the Custom Bridge may be too hot for what I want. Does the Custom Bridge sound overly hot at all? How does it compare to the Texas Special bridge other than it being hotter?

Hey Erik,

I really don't find the Antiquity Custom Bridge too hot at all. I feel the overwinding of this pup really fills out the mids nicely and adds punch to the low end. The Antiquity Texas Hot set in my JB Strat measures 6.53k neck, 6.42k RW RP mid & 9.93k for the bridge. I know the addition of the 3k in the bridge may seem like alot, but believe me, to my ears it's dispersed in all the right places. Still get that really nice quack in the mid/bridge position but the extra balls with the bridge alone is very nice to have. I little roll off on the volume and your back to what reminds me of the Texas Special. Alot of folks around here have a fondness for the Antiquities, both the Texas Hots and the Surfers, so maybe they'll chime in with their .02. Good luck.

What exactly are the differences between the Texas Hots and the Surfers? I was comparing the specs in the charts on the SD Antiquity product page, and except for the magnet polarity all the specs are identical. What distinguishes them from each other?

I think Surfers are A5 and the Texas Hots are A2. I could be wrong.

I have a full set of Texas Hots with the custom bridge in my Jimmy Vaughn strat and the bridge does not overpower the other pickups at all i feel.I think it just makes it a bit more aggresive,but not louder and blends well with the middle position.Jason

Hmmm, interesting. I'll have to see what a full set of Texas Hots would run. See, I'm more versed in humbuckers than single coils so there's a lot of single coils I'm not familiar with.

What I hate is when I haven't played my Strat in a while, I start tossing ideas like this around, then I pick it up and second guess everything. I like the SSL-6 in there now but I think it's a bit too hot for what I'm looking for now. I got it because I wanted a hotter bridge pickup that was flat poled like the mid and neck, which are still stock. But, now I'm getting back in to staggered poles, hence the Texas Specials being an option. I always loved their tone. I'll keeps the Texas Hots as an option as well.
